Pfizer Covid Booster 6 months - 4 years Availability! 💉🩹

If your child is between 6 months- 4 years old and you have been looking for the Pfizer booster dose, it is available at Martin's Wellness Pharmacy at the South Lamar location ONLY. (please keep reading)

Because there are multiple doses in each vial, the pharmacy needs to schedule appointments for this vaccine intentionally to reduce vaccine waste. Because of this they will be offering the vaccine on specific dates ONLY.

Scheduling is now open on their website (www.martinswellness.com) for a Baby Pfizer Covid Vaccine Clinic on THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 2, 2023 at the SOUTH LAMAR LOCATION ONLY. They have ordered 30 doses only for this first round as they gauge community interest, but if they use it up, they promised they will order more!

They are the best, and they truly want to be able to provide this for our babies and little ones! Please let us know if you need us to send a prescription to the pharmacy for you.

Fall vaccine update!

Beyfortus (RSV antibody)

Beyfortus is a recombinant human monoclonal antibody designed to protect infants from severe RSV disease. This type of antibody is laboratory-made, is delivered by injection, and then circulates and protects the baby for about 5 months. This is different from a vaccine where a part of a virus or bacteria is presented to the immune system which triggers the body to make its own antibodies that may circulate much longer, even a lifetime. This difference is called passive vs. active immunity.

What is RSV? RSV is a very contagious respiratory virus that typically begins as a minor cold but can progress to a lower respiratory tract infection causing labored breathing, hypoxia (low oxygen), and even apnea (pauses in breathing). It is the leading cause of hospitalization in babies under 1 year of age.

Who is eligible for Beyfortus? Both term and preterm newborns born during RSV season and all infants entering their first RSV season. Children up to 24 months who remain vulnerable to severe RSV disease are eligible during their second season as well. This includes preterm babies, babies with chronic lung disease, congenital heart disease, and other complex medical conditions.

RSV season is typically November through March. One single dose of Beyfortus will be given in the fall which will last through that season.

Where can I get my child vaccinated? We are in the process of determining how soon we can carry Beyfortus in our practice. We are also in touch with local hospitals, pharmacies, and specialist offices in the area to determine the best approach for immunizing our newborns and older infants. Stay tuned - we hope to have news very soon.

Influenza (flu shot!)

Flu vaccines have arrived and are ready for use! It is recommended for all children, age 6 months and up. Children under 5 years and those with underlying medical problems (including asthma) are at higher risk for severe disease. Options for administration:
You can ask for a flu shot at any regularly scheduled office visit. It should not be given if your child has had a fever in the last 24 hours, but otherwise, it is safe to give during mild illnesses.
Starting 10/7, Flu shots will be available Saturday morning at the Southwest Medical Village office BY APPOINTMENT ONLY from 8 - 10 am. Call the office or send a portal message for an appointment. These are not available for online booking. Parents can also receive their vaccines at that time if desired.
In addition to the 2 options above, nurse visits can be scheduled on Wednesdays and Thursdays at our Bee Cave office - parents can also receive their vaccines at that time if desired. You can call for an appointment or send a message through the portal and we can help you to schedule.

COVID-19 Monovalent Booster

The latest COVID booster targeting the omicron subvariant is now available and recommended by the CDC for all ages. We do not carry COVID vaccines in our office, however, most local pharmacies will have it available in the next few weeks. Many local Walgreens and CVS pharmacies are already administering it for patients 12 years and older. The pediatric doses should be arriving in the next couple of weeks. Dripping Springs Pharmacy continues to be our preferred pharmacy for infants and young children. They do require a prescription so please contact our office and we will send that over for you electronically. It is recommended to keep the same brand as previous doses, so if you are calling for an order, please let our phone team know whether your child has previously received the Moderna or Pfizer vaccine. Below is information on dosing, feel free to reach out if you have specific questions about your child.
1. If your child has had COVID infection in the past 3 months, it’s reasonable to wait at least 3 months before getting this updated vaccine. Natural disease likely offers protection for 3 months and the immune response to the vaccine may be better.
2. For unvaccinated children ages 6 months to under 5 years, the updated vaccine series is 2 doses of Moderna or 3 doses of Pfizer vaccine.
3. For unvaccinated children ages 5 years and up, the updated vaccine is 1 dose of Moderna or 1 dose of Pfizer vaccine. (The rationale is that older children are more likely to have had a previous infection. This primes the immune system to have a better response to a single dose of vaccine.)
4. Previously vaccinated children ages 6 months and up are encouraged to get 1 dose of the updated vaccine at least 2 months after the last time they were vaccinated.

Life is truly about balance. I think as parents we can say we certainly feel it when we are overwhelmed with juggling everything that a busy family and work life brings. This is a wonderful expression of what so many teens face with the pressure of racing to the top in academics and college prep and a reminder that it’s ok to let them choose balance in their lives too. Couldn’t be written better!

https://www.facebook.com/100044204840878/posts/726702218813266/?mibextid=cr9u03

My freshman daughter came home from school yesterday and let me know that her teacher pulled her aside. “She wants me to move up to honors next year,” she told me. “She said she didn’t think I was challenging myself enough.”

“Well, that’s a compliment from your teacher,” I responded. “But, what do you think?”

She looked crestfallen. “I just don’t know how I can fit it in because everyone complains about how much extra work honors is. Taking it as a regular class this year gave me some breathing room and it was the one class I didn’t have to stress about. And next year I have driving school and cross country and all my other advanced classes. I have to volunteer for Key Club and I want to babysit to have spending money and….” She went on and on for a few minutes.

“I guess we have our answer then,” I told her. “You are pretty busy already, so you don’t have to add to your schedule.”

“But what about challenging myself?” she asked. “Like, are colleges going to be down on me because I didn’t take all honors classes?”

And I looked at my young daughter, and for the first time in a long while, she looked small to me instead of the young woman she is becoming--more like when she was a scared toddler about to get in trouble.

And I thought, how much more challenged does she have to be?

She is challenged to get enough sleep every night after long school days full of advanced classes.

She is challenged to find downtime because she chose to participate in a high school sport.

She is challenged to find balance in a stress-filled trek to get into a college.

She is challenged by peer pressure and social media and the dangers of simply walking into her school each day.

While I think her teacher one-hundred percent had my daughter’s best interest at heart, I think as parents, we have to start looking at our kids in a more holistic manner.

And the first step is trying to choose my words a little differently when I talk to my teens about their futures.

My daughter (with our input) made a conscious choice not to take all honors classes this year. As parents, we told her she should challenge herself in the areas she cared about the most, which in her case is math and science, and then decide one-off in the other areas.

She has said several times it was the best decision she's ever made, and her grades have backed it up. She's adjusted well to the high school routine, and while she's busier than I would like, she's handled it well.

But we can't overestimate how well our kids are handling stress. One innocuous, well-meaning comment from a teacher she loves inadvertently shook my daughter's confidence and made her question her choices. It revealed how much pressure my daughter was internally feeling.

Not everything our tweens and teens do needs to be challenging or rigorous or competitive. Most of us don’t thrive in that kind of environment, and for sure, our kids don’t.

So, I told my daughter I thought she should take the grade-level course again for the next year. She challenged herself in other areas, and I thought she found a good balance this year in her course selection.

"It's your decision," I told her. "But I promise you your life won't be ruined if you don't take honors English. It could be changed, however, if you get so stressed out you have a mental breakdown or developt chronic anxiety."

And I saw a flood of relief in her eyes.

At the end of the day, it's our job as parents to look at the big picture, but I think as a whole we should be chang, ing the conversations we have with our teens. Instead of jumping at every opportunity to make things more rigorous and competitive, we should look at how much free time they have, their current stress levels, where their passions lie, and how much sleep they get each night.

We should tell our teens that it's great to challenge ourselves, but does it make you happy?

I’m glad that my daughter has teachers that believe in her potential, but I’m also glad she recognizes she has limits.

It’s tough to find the balance in teaching our kids to push themselves to reach their potential without burning out or breaking down.

We need to start putting our kids’ mental health first, and then teach them how to decide what they can handle.

Because if your kid can’t sleep because of stress or starts hurting themselves to cope with anxiety or something worse yet, that “challenging” course they felt they should take or team we pushed them to join or added responsibility they weren't ready for may not be worth it.

I absolutely want my kids to reach for the stars, but I hope they learn to care about their well-being more than anything else.

*Repost from three years ago. Many wanted to know how this philosophy turned out for my girls. Both were accepted to right-fit colleges where one will participate in cross country and track and the other in the orchestra program. They both say balancing their schedules was the best decision they made in high school.
