Hi friends, Tonight's Jazz Wednesday Presentation will be on the Modal/Chordal connection. I'll try to show by playing how you can play modes and chords are not that separate. Simple labels in music should be signposts, not boxes. Modal music is not without harmony, and harmonic progressions can be interpreted modally.
Join me at 8pm cst for my live-stream.

Hi jazz lovers, this Tuesday April 7 we will try something new, an online Jazz Workshop Session, at 8pm cst. The idea is to exchange ideas, tips and techniques on jazz performance, within the constraints of our online technology. Some folks are successfully jamming together in real time over the internet, but your equipment has to be working well to avoid latency (time delays & glitches). To avoid that rabbit hole, I plan to host the monthly Jazz Jam as a tele-workshop. To join, just get online with your instrument. You can set up your camera and participate, or just listen in as you choose.
My question is, which format do most of you prefer, Zoom, Skype, or what? I'm thinking of hosting it on Zoom, but also live-streaming it on Facebook. Please respond here, or email me at pksaxhq@gmail.com.
I hope to see you virtually tomorrow evening!
PK

Hi friends, I’m going to attempt a livestream broadcast this evening at 8:00cst. This is to keep the Jazz Wednesday schedule going, even though the Skylark Lounge is temporarily closed. Tonight will be a test, solo music for 30 minutes. If all goes well, I’ll begin regular full streaming shows with band.
Thanks in advance for participating!

3/4 is March Forth and Do Something Day, an unofficial but widely recognized holiday. As far as I can tell it was started by writer Deborah Shouse around 2011. Some people use the day to look inward and do something to improve their life, health or mood. Some people look outward and do something to increase community engagement. The idea is just to do something positive!

Hi friends, here's an excerpt from an article about my Festivus show, published in the New York Times!
Just kidding, nobody published it; after I submitted it to various media, it languished like Tiny Tim peering through Scrooge's window, coughing and shivering, then being knocked to the cold, hard ground by busy and distracted Christmas shoppers.
But you can read it here! : )

Paul Klemperer’s Annual Festivus Celebration - The Story

The Christmas season can be culturally complicated in a society with diverse beliefs and traditions. Most people just want to share the spirit of love, caring and maybe some eggnog, but it’s never quite that simple.

So it was for Austin saxophonist and bandleader Paul Klemperer. “For years I did an inclusive Season of Light music show. It seemed to make sense, partly because of my own mixed Christian/Jewish family background. But over the years it started to feel a little artificial, one-size-fits-all. Then I tried a Festivus show and it all fell together.”

Festivus, the fictitious holiday featured on the Seinfeld show, is the creation of writer Dan O’Keefe and his father Daniel who, according to family lore, came up with the idea in 1966. An antidote to the commercialism of Christmas, Festivus involves no gift-giving and features only an unadorned aluminum pole.

Paul Klemperer’s Festivus Celebration takes this idea and runs with it, turning the occasion into a full-fledged variety show with an underlying purpose, raising funds for a good cause. For the last seven years the cause has been The Austin Children’s Shelter (SAFE Alliance).

This year’s theme is “We’re All In This Together!” The show mixes humor, music and dance, and the audience is encouraged to sing along. “I feature some of the best musicians in Austin, who happen to be some of my best friends as well,” says Klemperer. “We play a mix of jazz, blues, soul, Latin, international pop, and more. Music from all over the world becomes part of our shared heritage, and we celebrate that unity in diversity. Plus all the Festivus songs, of course.”

The musical talent includes French-Lebanese singer Julie Slim, Dallas-born blues and soul singer Joanna Ramirez, and jazz-pop singer Casie Schennum. The band (PK & The Festivians) includes guitarists Russell Scanlon and Chris Vestre, bassist Chris Jones, and drummer Joe McCreary. Other musical special guests will make appearances as well.

This year’s show will be December 15 at Barrel O’ Fun, Mueller, inside Alamo Drafthouse. Doors at 6:30pm, showtime 7:00-9:30pm. There’s no cover charge, but guests are encouraged to donate at the event, or make an advance donation through the Festivus GoFundMe Campaign. Advance donations secure a spot in the VIP section.
