Ten Eyck Landscape Architects

Ten Eyck Landscape Architects Our designs prioritize native plant communities, water harvesting technologies, and durable materials, artfully expressed through form, color, and texture.

Since 1997, Ten Eyck Landscape Architects (TELA) has connected the urban dweller with nature and each other through civic, institutional, commercial, residential, and mixed-use urban infill landscape architecture projects. Our studio—based in Austin, Texas since 2007, and previously in Phoenix, Arizona—leads design innovation in the region and illustrates the capacity for place-based urban landscape architecture to address pressing global issues such as drought, climate mitigation and aging infrastructure. TELA is dedicated to creating restorative outdoor environments that are infused with natural beauty, provide habitat, purify air and water, help mitigate climate, encourage social interaction, and foster human healing. Recognizing the complexities of this endeavor, our collaborative thirteen-person team works closely with architects, engineers, ecologists, and clients to generate historically sensitive and socially, financially, structurally, and environmentally sustainable environments. From site planning through construction, TELA draws from extensive experience and intimate knowledge of place to transform ordinary outdoor urban spaces into authentic, vibrant landscapes that stimulate the senses and unify communities.

We are elated to announce that Holdsworth Center has won a 2025 WLA Award of Excellence in the Built Hospitality Landscape Design Category!!

Our work for the Holdsworth Center, a campus for public educational leadership development, layers circulation, exterior social spaces, and a robust building program onto an ecologically rich landscape, encouraging visitors to connect with nature and one another. New trails and paseos allow guests to traverse the diverse endemic ecosystems and lead to outdoor classrooms and gathering spaces which are knitted into the restored landscape. Interactive rain gardens treat 100% of site stormwater to filter out pollutants before it drains into Lake Austin. Once an overgrazed pasture overrun with invasives, the 44-acre site now teems with native wildlife and provides a nurturing setting that inspires educators while healing the land.

Central Texas is not only where we work but it is also our home. This past weekend’s floods tore through our communities and ravaged some of our most beautiful, vital riparian ecosystems. Our hearts are heavy knowing the impact this devastation will have for years to come.

At Ten Eyck Landscape Architects, we have taken an oath to aid in land stewardship to support community resiliency for generations to come. Usually that comes in the form of our work, but this week we will be contributing directly to local agencies spearheading relief efforts. Should you be able, we urge you to do the same.

Below is a non-exhaustive list of organizations to contribute to:

Kerr County Flood Relief Fund
Texas Search and Rescue
World Central Kitchen
Hill Country Helpers
Austin Pets Alive
HEB Disaster Relief

Thank you to our first responders and volunteers who are working around the clock to provide relief. The only way forward is together. ❤️‍🩹

Big things are on the horizon in Buda!

We’re thrilled to be working on the first phase of the John D. and Byrd Mims Garison Memorial Park — a 44-acre slice of Central Texas magic along Onion Creek. A family-owned farm for over 100 years, the site boasts an array of landscape typologies - from an open plateau to rocky limestone outcrops to a floodplain forest terrace - that each sustain a variety of wildlife habitats, enabling visitors to experience the immense ecological diversity of Central Texas.

Phase 1 of the design builds on previous master planning efforts to showcase the beauty of the natural landscape while adding amenities to support public use of the park, such as restrooms, picnic facilities, water access, and accessible paths. The park also forges a critical link in Buda’s network of green spaces, becoming part of a larger trail system along the creek.

Stay tuned as this project continues to take shape!

She most enjoys weaving together architecture, psychology, ecology, and economics to increase the quality of urban life in a sustainable way. Jia earned her Bachelor of Engineering Degree from Tongji University in Shanghai, China in 2010 and her Master of Landscape Architecture from Louisiana State University in 2012. Outside of work, Jia is a passionate reader and avid traveler, always seeking new adventures through literature and delighting in the exploration of diverse cultures around the world.

Next up is Mason!

Mason’s fascination with the natural world began during his childhood, exploring the woods and farmland near Omaha, NE, where he grew up. From camping in Nebraska with his boy scout troop to hiking through the Rocky Mountains on family vacations, he was always keenly observing and questioning the plant and animal life around him. This curiosity deepened during his undergraduate studies in Architecture at the University of Nebraska – Lincoln, where he also pursued a minor in Landscape Architecture.

After graduating from UNL, Mason embarked on a 6-week, 9,030-mile road trip across the central Great Plains, assisting with a documentary on regenerative agriculture. This journey ignited his passion for integrating regenerative food systems into landscape design, a focus he continued to explore in his graduate studies at the University of Texas at Austin. There, he earned his Master’s in Landscape Architecture in 2024, receiving the Award of Excellence in General Design from the 2024 ASLA Student Awards and the inaugural Frederick R. Steiner Book Prize for outstanding preparation for professional practice.

When Mason isn’t exploring the outdoors in Austin—whether walking, hiking through Turkey Creek, or taking photos—you might find him cooking at home, working on his book, rock climbing, or traveling.

Welcome to the team Mason!

There are some new faces around our office and we’d like to introduce them to y’all!

Laura is a french-born landscape designer who has spent half her life moving around the U.S. She has worn many hats before joining Ten Eyck, including conducting research in evolutionary biology, working in ecological restoration, and working as a designer on landscape architecture and urban planning projects around the country. As a designer, Laura is passionate about the interconnectivity of the human experience, environmental health, and the magic of place.

Laura holds a Masters in Landscape Architecture from the University of Texas at Austin, where she was awarded the ASLA Certificate of Honor. She has recently moved back to Austin after spending time in the northeast and can be found around town catching a live show, swimming at Barton Springs, or taking her small dog on long walks.

We’re so excited to have her on the team. Welcome Laura!

We are so excited to share that Kingsbury Commons at Pease Park was awarded ‘Project of the Year’ at the 2024 Austin Green Awards! Our love for this project and the greater Austin community that it serves runs deep. Thank you to the judges for recognizing our team’s work with this honor. See what they had to say below!

“We were blown away by this project, setting a very high bar. It did so much with and celebrated the challenges, elevating them to be wonderful, beautiful elements that became the focal points of design. We want to visit this place! It’s such a celebration of what’s possible with smart design – a holistic, resilient approach that respects the site’s ecology without too heavy a hand.”

“Kingsbury Commons is a case study in constrained jubilance – every constraint was seen as opportunity; they didn’t leave anything for granted.”

“This is an excellent project that balances architecture, planning, landscape, community – thoughtfully and precisely, with a light touch on the site, and integrates all the elements that the Austin Green Awards represents.”

Meet our summer intern!

Kaitlyn grew up in the small town of Dandridge, located on the French Broad River in the mountains of East Tennessee. Growing up, she enjoyed spending days on the water and hiking through the woods as well as reading in cozy indoor environments. Kaitlyn’s interest in landscape architecture stemmed from a curiously creative mind, an enjoyment of nature, and a want to build up her community. In her practice, she is particularly compelled to explore the integration of human and non-human systems and how modern software and technology might help us better understand, and graphically represent, these complex and dynamic relationships.

She has a bachelor’s degree from the University of Tennessee Knoxville’s College Scholars program in Green Planning and Ecological Landscape Design, with minors in leadership studies and plant sciences. She is currently pursuing her MLA at the University of Tennessee Knoxville. She has enjoyed exploring Austin during her summer internship here and has been able to visit many fun locations.

We have loved having her as part of our team. Best of luck Kaitlyn and be sure to visit us again soon!
