One of the phrases I find myself repeating most often is- we don’t see things for how they are, we see them for how we are. I find it so simple and so true. Our mental state and collective subjective experience changes how we perceive things, be it people, places, things or ideas. We perceive a mountain to be taller and steeper the heavier our backpack. The more loving and supportive our relationships, the more we project love on the external world. When we are critical of ourselves, we tend to look at everything else with an eye of criticism. Take some time to be mindful on how you’re choosing to be aware. Do you notice more faults, errors and mistakes? If so think about how this is affecting the overall reality of your being.

It is a choice and you have the power to decide what world you live in. ✨

Highly recommend this book for anyone on the fence about jumping into meditation. Daniel Goleman and Richie Davidson take you through their 30+ years into studying meditation. Thanks to many technological advances in instruments used to study the trait and state affects in meditators- they are able to publish and outline scientifically valid conclusions prompting even the biggest skeptics to reconsider. There’s far too many benefits to type but one particularly fascinating scientific result points to mediation as being able to slow down the shortening of your telemeres. Telomeres are tiny caps at the end of your DNA. As we age, they shorten. Not only does mediation slow down the shortening but it can also add length resulting in significant change for cellular aging. Mediation increases telomerase activity- the enzyme responsible for reversing telomere shortening. Check out the authors’ work or Elizabeth Blackburn’s telomeres research which earned her a Nobel Prize.

Sometimes simple is best. Paying attention to all that brings you joy over what does not is all it takes to change how your brain focuses attention. Many of us are patterned to look at what’s wrong. We look in the mirror and judge what we’d like to change, what’s not attractive, what we don’t like about ourselves.
What if we looked and noticed what we loved instead? How would that impact your perception of yourself and of others?
When you begin a day with judgement directed to yourself, it’s likely that will project out into your entire world. Your brain goes off that momentum and the neural connection grows stronger and fires faster. So be mindful on what negative thoughts you hold because ultimately those thoughts shift the reality you see. ✨

If you go towards the pain you feel instead of turning away, you will discover the place that needs work. Take the time to reflect rather than ignore, project, displace or repress. Ask yourself why this hurts so bad, why it’s staying in your thoughts. Find the true root and take care of the pain in a tender way. Make peace with pain, shed a layer and step forward. “Be like a tree and let the dead leaves drop.”

Physical pain indicates an area in your body that needs attention. Emotional pain is no different. If something happens to make you feel anxious, triggered or tightened, follow the pain. It will tell you where you need to do some work. Ask yourself, what about this is making me suffer? What button is it pressing? Usually it touches a deeply held belief that is ultimately limiting us. Follow the feeling, turn towards it in a kind, tender way and learn about that which is holding you back.

Instead of focusing on the anger or frustration that comes up when your around those who challenge you, think what can this person teach me? Reframe your perspective so everything and everyone can serve as a lesson. ✨

I love what I get to do for ‘work’. To sit in a completely authentic space with another listening to their narrative. Hearing about the wonderful, successful, revelatory moments. Hearing about the pain, suffering, sadness and shame. Masks come off when there’s an atmosphere of acceptance and non judgement. Ultimately, as this heartening poem points out- when people feel understood, attuned with, listened to and above all loved, magic has room to happen ✨

Think about the child version of yourself, the one who had an innate sense of connectedness and wonder. We are born to feel deeply, to connect easily, to love greatly. This makes sense from an evolutionary perspective for it’s easier to survive in a tribal community than alone. The most nurtured animal is the one that survives and thrives. Unfortunately for many of us, something happens during our youth that creates an inner sense of fear. Maybe you were hurt by a parent or by a friend and that resulted in a narrative of distrust. Maybe you felt so much pain at a point in your life that it’s safer to stop feeling than to experience it again. This happens a lot- it’s a defense mechanism that goes back to our primitive days. Physical pain resides in the same part of the brain as emotional pain. But living with fear is like living in black and white. You miss the richness, the vivid texture that is life experienced with love. You’re cut off from there very stuff that makes this life so worth living- the magic of connection. ✨
