Matrix Laser is the same type of laser used in the full-field treatment, a CO2 laser, but it is fractionated. What this means is that rather than every square millimeter of your face being treated, the laser lays down a pattern of very small dots. Because untreated skin is left in between the dots, the healing is much more manageable. With a Matrix Laser treatment, you can do a single pass or multiple passes. The more passes, the greater the percentage of skin treated. It is a direct relationship between the number of passes, the length of healing, and the amount of improvement.

Simply put, Matrix Laser opens up laser resurfacing to a range of results and healing times to fit the patient’s desires. Standard resurfacing is an all or nothing type of treatment. Prior to fractionated CO2 treatments, the next step down from a standard laser resurfacing was a big step down. Now we can fill in the gap with significant improvement in color and texture without the protracted healing time.

Matrix Laser can also be used as part of a series. With a single pass treatment, most patients wear makeup and look pretty close to normal the next day. You can do several treatments like this spaced a month or more apart. Alternatively, you can do a 3 or 4 pass treatment and not anticipate any further treatment.

Unlike standard laser resurfacing, Matrix Laser is done with only a topical cream numbing gel and some nerve blocks if the patient desires. A va**um can be taken as well. During the procedure, there is still pain and if you would rather have IV sedation, this is offered.

Skin resurfacing is a procedure used to improve the appearance of the skin. There are many different ways to resurface the skin and each way has varying degrees to which it can be done. The healing time and results are directly related. There aren’t any shortcuts; the more result you want, the longer the healing. The gold standard of resurfacing is the deep peel. When the latest generation of injectable fillers came to market it really revolutionized the concept of the “lunchtime procedure”. Along with BOTOX®, truly amazing things can happen using these products with little or no recovery time needed.

There are two concepts to understand with injectable fillers. There is volume and there is crease filling.

CREASE FILLING
Crease filling is the most common application for filler products. The smile lines and marionette lines (corner of the mouth down to jaw) are far and away the most commonplace to use fillers. Hyaluronic acid (HA) products are usually the first line of treatment here and work very well. We like Juvederm and Restylane® because of the excellent results and great longevity, which is often over a year. The safety profile is excellent and the product is dissolvable if you have any reason to want it out. Other common creases to fill include the ones between your eyebrows (usually in conjunction with BOTOX®), dimples, and, acne/chickenpox scars.

VOLUME FILLING
Volume filling is the latest concept in facial rejuvenation. Common areas to fill for volume include the lips, lower eyelids, cheeks, temples, and along the jawline. With aging, we tend to lose fat in our face. Volume filling reshapes your face to a more youthful appearance. In the lower eyelids, we only use the HA products. This area is absolutely unforgiving and only a dissolvable product should be used. At the same time, filling this area can make a dramatic difference. The lips are also very well treated with HA products such as Juvederm and Restylane®.

Cheek and temple filling is best done with Restylane®, Lyft, or VOLUMA™. This product is thicker and has superior longevity when treating these areas. Sculptra® is also used in these areas, but I have not been impressed with the results. Sculptra® requires a series of treatments, is costly, and is hit or miss on whether your body generates the collagen response needed to achieve results. Restylane® Lyft and Voluma, on the other hand, are volume fillers and always produce some filling as it is not dependent on your body reacting to it.

As we age, the skin in the upper eyelids loses its elasticity and becomes stretched resulting in a flap of skin. This flap of skin may start to “crawl out your eyelashes” to the point that it obscures vision and causes fatigue as you strain to hold the eye open.
