Austin Speech Labs

Austin Speech Labs Austin Speech Labs is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization in Austin, TX.

Austin Speech Labs was founded in 2008 when two speech therapists saw a gap between services covered by medical insurance and what stroke survivors truly need to return to their social and professional lives. Speech language pathologists, Shilpa Shamapant and Shelley Adair, founded Austin Speech Labs to provide the intensive and individualized speech therapy required for optimum recovery. We strive to provide a supportive environment for our clients to recover their communication skills after suffering stroke. It is important to our organization to bring these survivors into our Austin Speech Labs community and prevent isolation after such a traumatic event. We want to help them regain their speech so they can express themselves to their families and loved ones, which we consider a basic human need. Austin Speech Labs believes that giving them back their voice will help them rejoin the larger community. We’re thrilled to share a sneak peek of our new Chrome extension, designed by UT student Tony Zhu. With it, therapists can type any word or sentence during a session and instantly see the phonology for each sound—plus generate custom homework activities in a flash.
Why does this matter?

Because it turns hours of prep into seconds of setup.
💬 “The convenience of the Chrome extension has truly been a game changer. Instead of spending hours making materials, I can simply type in the words or sentences I want the client to produce on the fly during a session. This has allowed me to follow the client’s lead instead of the other way around.” — ASL Therapist
Right now, we’re using it in-house, but our goal is to make it available to the public soon—bringing faster, more flexible therapy to even more stroke survivors.
🙌 Huge thanks to Tony for helping us push the boundaries of what’s possible in recovery.
