Here is some great information about nursemaid's elbow. This is a common elbow injury in young children, usually caused by pulling quickly on a child's hand (usually preventing them from doing something dangerous, or preventing them from falling) or spinning them around holding them by the hands. It is painful, and most children won't move their arm if this happens. Thankfully this injury is typically very easy to fix without an xray. The providers at After Hours Kids can diagnose and treat this injury in the office; we are open every night of the week. Read this article for more information

Nursemaid's elbow is sometimes referred to as "pulled elbow" because it occurs when a child's elbow is pulled and partially dislocates. The medical term for the injury is "radial head subluxation."

Medical Laboratory Professionals Week is April 23-29, 2023 and we wanted to take a moment to let our wonderful lab staff know how thankful we are for them! They make our lives easier every day as they process endless COVID, strep, urine, and blood tests. They call parents with lab results and go from room to room visiting our sweet newborns to collect newborn screens and bilirubin samples. We truly could not do our jobs without them and are so grateful to get to work with such an awesome group. Thank you, Aly, our amazing lab supervisor, for managing the lab so well! Thank you lab team (Aaron, Chalo, Corina, DJ, Elle, Fiona, Georgia, Karli, Kate, Krishna, Maddie, Marissa, and Roshan) and for all your hard work! We appreciate each of you.

Sometimes when your child is sick or injured it is hard to know where to take them for medical care, their pediatrician's office, After Hours Kids, Urgent care, or the emergency room? If your child is experiencing a true emergency you should always call 911. In the Austin area, Dell Children's and St. Davids both have a pediatric emergency room. If it is not a situation where they are in serious danger, it makes sense to call their pediatrician's office, most offices have someone on call at all times and can guide you on where to bring your child. For younger children, it is important to take them to a pediatric provider as many urgent cares and even emergency rooms are not as well trained to treat young children. After Hours Kids is open every night of the week and 361 days/year, and is a great option for care in the evening. This article gives great tips on this topic as well.

When your child is sick or hurt, it can be difficult to tell whether an urgent care or emergency department is the best choice.

Ear infections are very common and one of the main complaints we see at After Hours Kids. Signs of a possible ear infection in older kids is ear pain. In younger children, they may be fussier, seem in pain when lying down, and not eating as well as normal. Often an ear infections comes after an upper respiratory infection (a cold) or significant allergies as congestion in the nose can clog the eustacian tubes causing fluid to sit and become infected. This article explains frequently asked questions about ear infections. If your son/daughter develops signs or symptoms of an ear infection after hours, AHK can help!
