We all know that being outdoors and engaging in physical activity is good for our mental health. But, did you know that makes it a very useful tool in sobriety? Connecting with nature is shown to improve reducing stress, anxiety, and depression while boosting mood, focus, creativity, and social connections. These things help us along our roads to recovery because, especially early in sobriety, as Patrick likes to point out, isolation, anxiety, and depression are very common experiences. These lucky guys got to reap all the benefits by going on a dove hunt! Not only did it improve their mentality, but it brought them back to that feeling of being a man out in God’s greatest design. We are all so thankful for these opportunities which give us an attitude of gratitude most of us never experienced in our addiction.

For most people here in Texas, Sunday means football. The field, the teams, the cheering and sometimes disappointment. For us here at Hensley House, it means fellowship AND football. Some of the guys took the opportunity to go out to eat and watch the football game together. It's moments like this when we are more grateful for our brothers in the house. When we can huddle together and enjoy events in each other's company.

We are excited to share the AWESOME opportunity Patrick gave us this week! Patrick handed out 8 tickets to those who wanted to go see PANTERA live Tuesday evening. You might ask yourself, "How does going to a rock concert have anything to do with sobriety?" We are more than happy to explain.

"By staying sober, individuals can remain present and engaged in the moment, without the distractions and mood-altering effects of drugs or alcohol." says Mountainside Recovery Center.

In addition, studies have shown that metal/ rock music can be cathartic for releasing negative emotions and pent up aggravations. So, not only were we able to experience a big event, fully present in the moment, but we were able to release some stored energy to keep us sound throughout the rest of our week.

The real takeaway though, the thing we can all hold on to, is that Patrick has our back. He re-invests back into us as often as he can. He holds us to high standards so that we can maintain our sobriety and become the men we were always meant to be, while also living life at full throttle and learning to enjoy every minute of it. Thank you, brother. You have impacted us all.

There's an old saying that you can't mix business with pleasure. For those of us in recovery, this is simply not true. After doing an H&I (Hospitals and Institutions, where we spread the message of unity, service, and recovery to those just getting into their sobriety), these gents enjoyed a nice meal together. Here's the thing- for those of us making our way down the road of recovery, our pleasure IS IN the business. It helps our recovery to spread the word, to reach out to others that are struggling, and to do it as a team. To those around us, we're just a group of guys meeting up for dinner. To us, however, it's a group of brothers engaging in an opportunity for fellowship to reflect on the work we did, the stories we encountered, and to share gratitude that our Higher Power has brought us this far.

So, while the rest of the world is held in a limitation- not mixing business with pleasure- we are unlimited in our ability to find pleasure from the business and get joy from simply giving back to the program that saved us.

Just a little reminder of why we work so hard at our recovery. While we can be without our substance of choice, working a program of recovery is essential for us for who struggled with addiction.

Our AA Big Book says, "We have been dealing with alcohol in its worst aspect. But we are not a glum lot. If newcomers could see no fun or joy in our existence, they wouldn't want it." - Alcoholics Anonymous Big Book pg 132. This is what has inspired Patrick, owner of Hensley Houses, to really teach us how to enjoy our lives in our sobriety. In addition to giving us the amenities and opportunities to live to the fullest, it also has inspired him to form the "Not A Glum Lot" nonprofit organization based solely on helping those new in recovery learn to enjoy the ride that is sobriety.

"Depression, anxiety, and isolation are common in early recovery and providing connection and friendships via recreational activities is a life saving measure." WeAreNotGlum.org.

The owner of the Hensley houses, Patrick, is always finding new ways to reinvest back into the houses and make life better for all of us. He's brought us a basketball/pickleball court, a pool, a pool table, ping pong table, and other wonderful things that make it both exciting and enjoyable to live in the Hensley houses. Our most recent addition is a sauna! We are all very excited to check it out. Thanks Patrick, we all feel the investment you make in us daily.

Our numbers are large throughout the Hensley houses and even larger once we find our home group, meet our sponsors/ sponsees, and make new friends in our recovery journey. However, that doesn't mean our fellowship opportunities are only met in large groups. Tonight, we went to Mesa Rim as only four men, ready to take on a different type of challenge. As addicts in recovery, we are constantly flexing our muscles of restraint. One way to make those restraint muscles stronger is to challenge our physical muscles as well. We try to work at least one of our muscles daily. Something for the physical, mental, and/or spiritual aspects of ourselves. Part of keeping our mind in shape is to keep our bodies in shape too. Here's to another awesome time, watching eachother strive and succeed!

Another Sunday has come upon us and we decided to make this house meeting and fellowship opportunity a little different. Many of us were cross addicts; addicted to several things.Tonight, as a brotherhood, we got to experience a ho**ah lounge, with nothing extra added except for fellowship and brotherhood. Our book tells us "So our rule is not to avoid a place where there is drinking, if we have a legitimate reason for being there. ." ~ Alcoholics Anonymous, Page 101

This applies to any and all triggering scenarios. Our lives don't stop or end because of our sobriety. In fact, we become more alive than ever before.
