Women diagnosed with breast cancer are almost immediately confronted with treatment decisions. If your surgical oncologist gave you a choice between a lumpectomy and a mastectomy to remove a tumor, that's often because either option will lead to a similar long-term health outcome.

As the leaves turn and the air cools, take some time to step outside. Whether walking a trail, watching wildlife or simply sitting quietly under a tree, you're doing something powerful for your body and mind. Spending time in nature isn't just relaxing; it's backed by decades of research showing real health benefits. Here's what science has to say:

Mental health:
🔸Reduces stress and anxiety: Natural environments lower cortisol, the body's primary stress hormone. Even 20 minutes in a park can make a difference.
🔸Improves mood and focus: Green spaces are linked to lower rates of depression and better attention, especially in children and teens.
🔸Supports emotional regulation: Nature helps calm the nervous system, making it easier to manage emotions and feel grounded.

Physical health:
🔸Lowers blood pressure and heart rate: Time outdoors can reduce cardiovascular strain and support heart health.
🔸Encourages movement: Walking, hiking or even light play in nature increases physical activity, which helps prevent chronic diseases.
🔸Boosts immune function: Exposure to natural environments may enhance immune response by increasing natural killer cell activity.

Congratulations to Nikki R., a registered nurse at Mayo Clinic Health System in Osseo, who was nominated and received The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses. Read an excerpt from the nomination.

“Upon my arrival, I was in a strange hospital, where I knew no one. Everyone, and everything was new to me. Nor did I entirely understand what was taking place, nor the seriousness of my injury. I was unable to walk or even stand due to my operation and my injury.

During my stay in Osseo, Nikki clearly stood out as a nurse of rare and capable knowledge. She explained everything from what she was doing, along with why she was doing it, and how she was doing it. Her medical assistance and care have left a huge impression on me and my family. Her performance was superb and clearly demonstrates that she is an outstanding wound care nurse, and that she possesses all the traits desired in a special care unit.

Her diligent and capable efforts have contributed to my recovery, and it is very clear that her loyal and capable excellence is second to none. Her medical treatment was the very best. Nikki has stood out as the best medical person I have encountered.

I want to thank Nikki for her efforts and wish her continued success in her future endeavors. It is because of nurses like Nikki that Mayo enjoys a high standard and reputation for professional excellence. Again, I would like to thank Nikki and express my highest regards.”

Pink eye (conjunctivitis) is an inflammation of the transparent membrane that lines the eyelid and eyeball, also known as the conjunctiva. Pink eye is most often caused by a viral infection. It also can be caused by a bacterial infection, an allergic reaction or sometimes an incompletely opened tear duct in babies.

Pink eye can be contagious. Getting an early diagnosis and taking certain precautions can help limit its spread.

The most common pink eye symptoms include:

🔸 Redness in one or both eyes.
🔸 Itchiness in one or both eyes.
🔸 A gritty feeling in one or both eyes.
🔸 A discharge in one or both eyes that forms a crust during the night that may prevent your eye or eyes from opening in the morning.
🔸 Tearing.
🔸 Sensitivity to light, called photophobia.

When should you seek medical attention?

If your symptoms don't start to get better within 12 to 24 hours, make an appointment with a healthcare provider to make sure you don't have a more serious eye infection related to contact lens use. People who wear contact lenses need to stop wearing their contacts as soon as pink eye symptoms begin.

Tips to minimize your risk of pink eye:

Practice good hygiene to control the spread of pink eye. Don't touch your eyes with your hands and wash your hands often. Use clean cosmetics and personal care items, such as towels and washcloths, and don't share them.

Pink eye can be diagnosed and treated virtually. Speak with a Primary Care On Demand provider if you have symptoms or need care: https://www.primarycareondemand.mayoclinic.org/

Congratulations to Kelsey M., a registered nurse at Mayo Clinic Health System in Mankato, who was nominated and received The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses. Read excerpts from two nominations.

“Kelsey was my day shift nurse when I was laboring with my son. She recognized right away that there were positioning issues with the baby and quickly intervened. Despite doing interventions, I had to have a c-section, and Kelsey was constantly checking on me and holding my hand. She was very thoughtful and continued to check in on me after I had my baby. Kelsey is an amazing nurse!"

"I had an induction for the loss of my baby at 17 weeks for unexplained reasons. Kelsey met me in the morning with open arms, both physically and emotionally. She prepared us for what may happen, how long it may take and what we may feel or experience. She made sure, even though he was not alive, that our boy was handled with care and respect. Kelsey gave us all the time with him, gave us special donated gifts, but tailored them to us and our family. Special teddy bears for our boys to remember their brother whom they never got to meet. Having her there with us that day not only helped me physically, but was a big part of how I am grieving and getting through this loss emotionally, which is truly something special about Kelsey and the way she cares for her patients.”

Seasonal allergies are nothing to sneeze at. About 1 in 4 U.S. adults experience symptoms each year like sneezing, congestion, runny nose and itchy eyes that can leave you feeling miserable.

Good news: You don’t have to let allergies keep you from enjoying the outdoors this fall.

Over-the-counter options like antihistamine pills, nasal sprays and eye drops can ease symptoms and taking them before heading outside can help prevent symptoms from starting. Be mindful of possible side effects like drowsiness or insomnia.

Simple ways to reduce exposure:
✅ Keep windows closed to keep allergens out.
✅ Skip the clothesline — pollen can cling to sheets and clothes.
✅ Stay indoors on dry, windy days.
✅ Avoid yardwork that stirs up pollen.

Take steps now so you can breathe easier and make the most of your fall.

The importance of all health screenings is that they can detect issues early. Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers in the world, and the second-leading cause of cancer deaths among men in the U.S.

Screening can find prostate cancer early, when it's still confined to the prostate gland. That's when patients have the best chance for successful treatment.

Congratulations to Deanna M. and Amy L., registered nurses at Mayo Clinic Health System in Eau Claire, who were nominated and received The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses. Read an excerpt from the nomination story.

“Triage received a call from one of our chronic catheter patients that his catheter was plugged. Deanna took the call and instructed the patient to come at 1500 that day - we would work him in.

At 1330 Deanna received a follow-up call that this patient was back on the line with a new concern. The patient was sitting in his car in the hospital parking ramp. He had experienced a bladder spasm that caused him to lose his bowels, with loose stool all over himself and his vehicle. This patient is unable to bathe himself and relies on the care of others. Covered in stool, he was unable to make the journey up to the clinic for assistance.

Amy and Deanna quickly packed two bags full of supplies — towels, blankets, surgical scrubs, gowns, gloves, wipes, you name it. In the most selfless way, they prepared, ready to take on any situation encountered.

With dignity maintained, the patient was brought up to the clinic, where his catheter exchange proved to be another element of surprise. Nursing was unable to maintain the wire, as the sediment was too thick to allow the wire to pass into the bladder. With a lot of prayer, a little skill, and a whole team of support, a successful exchange ensued. Deanna and Amy then proceeded to give the patient a sponge bath, cleaning what remained. They provided him with a clean pair of clothing and supplies to help cover the seat in his vehicle. And it wasn't until every last need was met, that they sent him on his way.

A hand-written letter was received. A note of profound thanks, that the " Mayo brothers would be so proud" as the work of Jesus was carried out that day. Certainly, a profound example of the work this team does each and every day, and in all the little and big ways, the urology crew is blessed with a team of nurses who intentionally choose grace, empathy, and mercy for those in need.”
