Juneteenth is ‘the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States.’ Other than marking a pivotal date of significance in American history, Juneteenth also serves as an opportunity for African Americans to cherish their culture and heritage. More than 155 years old, Juneteenth celebrates the liberation of African Americans from slavery in the U.S. The reason for it being celebrated on June 19 is because, on this day in 1865, when Major General Gordon Granger of the Union Army landed in Texas, he brought the news that the Civil War had ended and all slaves were free. The proclamation declaring the abolishment of slavery was issued by President Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863, in the nation’s third year of an ongoing civil war. Known as the Emancipation Proclamation, it declared that ‘all persons held as slaves within any State or designated part of a State […] shall be then, thenceforward, and forever free.’ Granger’s arrival at Texas was to enforce this decree, which had originally gone into effect two years earlier. The news had come as a shock to more than 250,000 slaves in Texas who were unaware of it.

The LGBTQIA+ community encompasses a wide range of identities, as well as expressions of gender and sexual orientation. Members of the community are also diverse in terms of race, ethnicity, religion, nationality, and socioeconomic status. This intersectionality brings diversity of perspective and experience. All of this is important to understand when considering mental health in the community, as well as the sense of pride and resiliency that can result from the uniqueness and complexity.

Identifying with the LGBTQIA+ community can be a source of strength, but it definitely presents unique challenges. It’s important to acknowledge how someone’s experience of sexual orientation and gender identity relates to mental health.

Many of the identities under the LGBTQIA+ umbrella are still not represented in large scale studies of mental health, and yet, there is still strong evidence from recent studies that members of this commuity are at a higher risk for experiencing a wide range of mental health issues- most predominantly depression and anxiety. LGBTQIA+ adults are more than twice as likely to experience a mental health condition, and transgender people specifically are more than four times as likely to experience a mental health condition.

LGBTQIA+ youth also maintain a higher risk for mental health conditions and suicidality. LGBTQIA+ youth are over twice as likely to report feelings of hopelessness or sadness. Transgender youth are twice as likely to experience symptoms of depression, suicidality, and attempted su***de as cisgender q***r youth.

There are many reasons why these statistics would be the case, including but not limited to socioeconomic and cultural conditions which force LGBTQIA+ members to face prejudice, harassment, and more. What is important to know is help is out there. Reach out to us through our website, gheffectpsych.com, or call 817-789-9744 to get connected with one of our clinicians today.
