If you know someone suffering from frequent headaches, please have them call for an assessment so we can help them feel better! In many cases, a single treatment can alleviate the pain of a headache, and it often only takes a few treatments to successfully address the root cause.

Where is My Motivation?
You have the best intentions to do something positive or productive, but end up not doing the thing you need to get done. Why is it so hard to get motivated?

Stagnation: the liver energy system is in charge of the flow of Qi throughout the body. When it gets stuck, you may experience neck and shoulder tension, headaches, irritability, impatience and lack of motivation. A perfect example is wanting to exercise, but having a really hard time motivating yourself, but if you push yourself to exercise, you notice your problem decreases drastically, and you feel like a different person when you come back home. This is because your Qi was stuck and exercise got it moving. Physical movement helps motivation problems connected to Qi stagnation. Push yourself in your workouts to clear your head and overcome the stagnation.

Dampness: joint pain, lack of motivation, foggy brain a general feeling of sluggishness, and an inability to keep focused on any given task. Dampness is slow and cloudy, and creates a haze over our mental functioning. Use a dehumidifier, or add houseplants and natural sources of light to your space. Avoid dairy, sugar, and fatty or greasy foods. Eat warm, cooked foods as much as possible, and limit your intake of raw or cold foods.

June is Alzheimer’s Awareness Month!

Alzheimer’s is the disease that is found to cause most cases of dementia. While Alzheimer’s disease and related Dementias are more common among aging adults, it is not a normal part of the aging process. Alzheimer's is a progressive and irreversible disease that slowly destroys long term memory and disturbs basic cognitive function as well. Studies are showing acupuncture can help improve the lives of those who are suffering from Alzheimer’s in a variety of ways.

With the loss of cognitive function comes the loss of independence. Displaced feelings of overall fear, loss, and helplessness can manifest into depression and/or anxiety. A study from Wellesley College evaluated participants who were receiving acupuncture treatments 2-3 times per week for three months. This study was able to conclude that regular acupuncture treatments can improve mood and energy among this demographic.

With more research being done showing promising early results, acupuncture should definitely be taken into consideration to offset these diseases. Acupuncture is safe, natural and side-effect free. Give us a call for more information: 512.387.4002.

Feeling Anxious?
Anxiety in oriental medicine (OM) can be caused by many different patterns. Here are some ways to help interrupt the pattern at home when you are feeling anxious.

Aromatherapy: Place a drop of Angelica or Bergamot essential oil in a diffuser

Yoga pose:
Standing Forward Bend: with your feet parallel to each other, bend at your hip joints and fold forward. Take long, slow deep breathes. It is OK to keep your knees bent. Hold this pose for up to three minutes or come in and out of it.

Zen Twist: Lay on your back with your knees bent with lower back flat, arms level with shoulders. Let your legs fall naturally to the right and roll your head to the left. Gently move your left shoulder blade down the back, opening and relaxing the chest, shoulders, and inner thighs. Long, slow deep breathes through the nose. After a few breathes slowly transition to the other side. Repeat this pose 3 times on each side.
Release and rest quietly on your back with your eyes closed, relaxing and breathing for 1-5 minutes

Be Present: shift your mind into the now by doing things with your hands and body that focus your mind in the present. Ideas: yoga, making art, singing, gardening, bird watching, rock climbing or anything that actively engages you in the here and now.

How TCM treats Sport Injuries:
*Acupuncture: used to help to increase blood flow to an area, reduce pain, inflammation and help tissues heal.
*Herbs: help with pain or associated symptoms during the recovery phase.
*Moxa: burned over certain points can reduce pain, increase range of motion, eliminate cold from the channels, and reduce inflammation.
*Gua Sha: refers to a technique of scraping along a channel or particular muscle fibers with a hard curved tool. Doing this helps break up adhesions that have formed in the muscle tissue, increases blood flow to the area and eliminates toxins stuck in a particular location.
*Cupping: uses special sterilized cups to create suction over large muscle areas. This helps muscles to relax, pulls toxins out of the channels and helps to physically pull apart layers of fascia that get stuck together with injury.

We have a plethora of tools at our disposal to help you achieve the goal of feeling your best and being able to participate in every activity you want to without pain. Give us a call if you'd like to learn more!
