After receiving his Masters in Robotics from Johns Hopkins University, Alexander Cohen joined the ClearCam team, a year and a half ago, as a contractor. He was then quickly offered a full-time position as a Product Engineer leading ClearCam’s robotic-focused efforts. With his endless stream of creative ideas, love of engineering, and overall eagerness to learn as well as mentor others, he fit into the team in no time.

When asked why he chose robotics, Alex is quick to show his love of solving even the simplest of problems. In his words, “They all have multiple layers, from design to mechanics, electronics, software, and many others, which makes them very interesting”. At ClearCam, he appreciates the overall team dynamics and is inspired by everyone’s resourceful inventive spirit. He especially enjoys mentoring the team’s interns and helping them grow their skills in product development and R&D.

When Alex is off the clock, he enjoys playing golf, tennis, and skiing. However, his main hobby is and will always be tinkering and solving problems. He says, “I’m lucky, I get to have my job be my hobby, so it’s always fun.”

ClearCam has reached a new milestone at a record pace! Just a few months after completing 100 successful clinical cases in March, we have now completed 200 cases. Our first employee spotlight featuring our first ClearCam employee, Mitch Gilkey! Mitch started working with ClearCam at the end of 2018. As a Senior Product Engineer, he plays a significant role in product development, specifically in taking medical device concepts to manufacture. Mitch loves experimenting to solve problems, and the "a-ha!" moments are the moments that fuel his passion for making things work.

Outside of work, Mitch enjoys snowboarding and taking road trips. He says, "I'm more about the travel than the actual destination. I enjoy the unexpected and the troubleshooting that comes from the unexpected." Mitch is also a wheel enthusiast! He loves all things wheels, from building hot rods to racing RC cars and riding his dirt bike. The first thing Mitch would buy if he won the lottery is a new truck for his mom - how sweet! Speaking of sweet things, Mitch says he can't live without sweets. We are fortunate to have such a humble and hardworking person on our team!

Surgeon satisfaction is a top priority for ClearCam. Clinical pilots revealed that the Kelling device would be even more effective if the device could be adjusted for different length laparoscopes. Team ClearCam Inc. is published in Springer Nature! There is concern that COVID-19 present in peritoneal fluid can be aerosolized during insufflation of the pneumoperitoneum. John Uecker MD, FACS, Christopher Idelson, and Professor Farshid Alambeigi explore mitigating that risk. https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s00464-020-08006-4

Viral particles have been shown to aerosolize into insufflated gas during laparoscopic surgery. In the operating room, this potentially exposes personnel to aerosolized viruses as well as carcinogens.
