The South Southwest MHTTC provided training and technical assistance to strengthen the behavioral health workforce and address inequities in the mental health field.

By highlighting cultural and linguistic responsiveness, the MHTTC worked to ensure that all population groups receive respectful, understandable, and appropriate services.

Recognizing and tailoring approaches to the unique values, beliefs, and customs of each community helps organizations promote better mental health outcomes not only for the overall local community but also for each smaller cultural group.

We have great news! Although the South Southwest MHTTC network is closing on September 29, our team at the Texas Institute for Excellence in Mental Health (TIEMH) was awarded the National Center for Mental Health: Dissemination, Implementation, and Sustainment (MHDIS) grant by SAMHSA 🎉

This grant allows us to continue serving Region 6 and now Region 8.

The MHDIS and its five bi-regional Mental Health Technical Assistance Centers will provide:

• Training and technical assistance on the planning, implementation, adaptation, and sustainment of a new/existing service.

• Localized, targeted, and intensive technical assistance to Center for Mental Health Services (CMHS) recipients and other mental health providers to improve the process of implementation, dissemination, and sustainment of services.

Thank you to the Stanford Medicine team for being amazing partners all these years. We're happy to continue working together!

If the goal of human-centered services is to promote health and wellness, having difficult conversations about history is an essential ingredient to individual and system-wide growth.

In the latest episode of Talking Beyond Trauma, Mordecai Dixon and Dr. Tonicia Freeman-Foster discuss the impact of history on the establishment of medical practices impacting mental health treatment in the Americas, specifically mental health diagnosis, on marginalized and oppressed people.

One of the projects we’re proud the South Southwest MHTTC contributed to was the Peer Support Workforce Project. It aims to enhance the role of peer support specialists in the mental health field by providing training, technical assistance, and knowledge dissemination.

The project promotes the integration of peer support within diverse mental health settings and fosters collaborations among stakeholders. Its goal is to create a more equitable and empowering mental health system that supports recovery and well-being for all.

Even though the grant is ending, you’ll be able to access the Peer Support resources on Texas Institute for Excellence in Mental Health (TIEMH.) Bookmark the page:

Season 4 of the Talking Beyond Trauma podcast is coming soon! This season, Mordecai Dixon and Dr. Tonicia Freeman-Foster will discuss the impact of historic trauma on mental health disparities.

Dr. T is a national trainer, consultant, innovative strategy partner, mentor, and coach with over 20 years of experience. We're so grateful to have her on the podcast 🎙

Mordecai and Dr. T will cover questions such as:

• What is disproportionality, and how is it realized?
• What are the characteristics of leaders who work with communities impacted by disparities?
• If there are systems in place to assure there’s access or no wrong door to services, why is there an issue with health disparity in communities of color?
• And much more

Recently we hosted the 2024 First Episode Psychosis (FEP) conference, which is one of the many FEP resources you can access after the grant ends on Texas Institute for Excellence in Mental Health (TIEMH.)

The FEP focus area of the South Southwest MHTTC provided cost-free training and support for mental health providers serving individuals with early psychosis. We valued evidence-based, recovery-oriented training that centered lived experience and cultural responsivity, offering diverse programming to enhance outcomes and accessibility for young people with early psychosis.

Explore the FEP resources you can now access through TIEMH: https://sites.utexas.edu/mental-health-institute/first-episode-psychosis/

Don’t forget to bookmark TIEMH to access these resources after the MHTTC grant ends September 29!

Our friends at SAMHSA's Office of Recovery just launched the digital "Gallery of Hope: Artistic Expressions of Recovery Across the Nation" on their website!

Their team invited individuals with lived experience and their families to submit original art. This initiative raises public awareness and understanding of the contributions people in recovery bring to our lives by offering a platform for creative expression as a means of connection, healing, and empowerment.

The project seeks to break down societal stigmas and foster greater understanding and support by showcasing art as a tool for growth and self-discovery. The gallery features 280+ artworks and is open until September 30 to celebrate National Recovery Month.

Congratulations to the Office of Recovery leadership, staff, and partners on launching the first year of "Art of Recovery" 🎉

Self-care is essential for providers! The Provider Wellbeing trainings stemmed from resources needed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on the mental health of all providers, including those in high-stress positions and those experiencing new levels of distress. It became crucial to offer resources and self-care practices to support wellness, increase resilience, and reduce burnout. The South Southwest MHTTC provided wellness and self-care resources to support these essential providers, which you can continue to access after the grant closes September 29 through Texas Institute for Excellence in Mental Health (TIEMH).
