Results that speak for themselves! Medical weight loss is the process of losing weight with the help and guidance of a healthcare professional. Your provider uses their knowledge and medical experience to help you create a realistic plan that meets your unique circumstances. Because every patient is different, every plan is different! Body composition analysis (pictured above) is critical for making sure the majority of weight loss is stemming from excess fat, rather than lean body mass.

When we perform NutriGenomic testing as a part of a functional medicine assessment, we obtain a small DNA sample to analyze for SNPs.

SNP stands for single nucleotide polymorphism. SNPs are the most common type of genetic variation. Many SNPs do not carry a significant clinical effect, however when SNPs occur within a gene or in a regulatory region near a gene, they may play a more direct role in disease by affecting the gene’s function.

While we can't change your DNA, we can use this information to help make decisions about nutrition, supplements, medications, and more!

NutriGenomic testing is one of the most important tools we use in functional medicine. NutriGenomics is the interaction between nutrients, diet, and the way our genes work. Genes can determine how our body responds to food, physical activity, and other lifestyle choices. Dietary components can also alter the way genes behave (gene expression). NutriGenomic testing can help determine each patient’s unique, genetic, metabolic needs.

Many of our patients come with obvious dysfunction, but are told that their labs are "normal." Why are normal reference ranges problematic?

There are a number of limitations with normal reference ranges.
-they don’t reflect how complex health is
-the ranges are not based on a healthy population
-they don’t take into account your risk of developing a disease

At Austin Preferred, we interpret lab studies using optimal ranges, which are based on clinical guidelines and scientific evidence. An optimal range is better linked to health and longevity.

Did you know Austin Preferred offers a range of wellness lab panels? Wellness lab testing helps you to screen for potential red flags that could compromise your health over time.

Reference ranges are used to interpret your blood test results and can tell you whether your levels are normal or abnormal. Normal reference ranges are a range of values that are considered normal. These values are usually based on the range that 95% of the population falls into.

Normal ranges carry a number of limitations, which is why many patients are left confused when told that their lab studies are “normal”

How to Walk on Ice

Winter is here, and with it brings the possibility of slick and icy surfaces. As Austinites, we don’t often have to battle the winter elements, but the icy pavement and rare snow flurries can increase your chance of injury. In these chillier months, we often see an increase of injuries due to slipping, including rotator cuff tears, broken hips, and bruised tailbones.

Our natural tendency when walking is to extend one foot forward, landing on the outstretched heel. When traversing a potentially slick surface, be sure to keep your weight forward on your front leg rather than extending it outward in front of you.

In addition to spinal adjustments and exercises, Chiropractors can become certified in different therapies, such as Acupuncture, to assist in the treatment of numerous conditions.

Acupuncture uses small needles, inserted into the skin, to help stimulate and increase the flow of blood and energy throughout the body. When energy becomes stagnant within the body, it can start to cause pain. By applying needles to certain areas of the body, it can help to break up any restricted flow of energy and help to heal the injury.

Dr. Gardner is certified in Acupuncture by the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners and can utilize Chiropractic and Acupuncture as a way to treat many different injuries and ailments.
