You may have heard about the anti-aging, wonderhype over exosomes- little packets of mRNA growth factor goodness that are secreted by stem cells. Medspas all over Austin are marketing their exosome treatments.
BUT, not all exosomes are created equal.
I have personally been approached by many companies touting their exosome excellence, but does the marketing hype stand up to science?
The reality of most commercial exosome products is that they don’t live up to claims. Uh-oh...
THE BAD NEWS: The scientists at UCI have measured several commercially-available (and commonly locally advertised) products and found them to contain far fewer exosomes claimed, and in some cases, NO EXOSOMES AT ALL. YIKES! 😱
👉🏼Where the companies’ marketing claimed they contained billions of exosomes, it was in truth really only 100nm, meaning they are actually extracellular waste disposal vesicles, not exosomes. So, they don’t carry the crucial cargo like mRNA. Another YIKES!
👉🏼What’s worse is that they were proven NOT to be immunomodulatory when put through standard testing. A true exosome product would be 10x the potency of the current gold standard, the Bone Marrow Stem Cells Growth Factors wrapped in nanolipids. But, alas, they had NONE of the immunomodulatory benefits they should.
👉🏼But, wait, there’s more bad news. Exosomes are delicate, so when mixed in skincare products, they rupture and become useless. So, these products are a useless waste of money, too.
THE GOOD NEWS: There is at least one company, Cellese/AnteAge that CAN engineer the stem cells to create custom exosome cargos for skin and hair, but they didn’t stop there!
