Our hearts are broken for the families affected by the recent flooding in the Texas Hill Country. As we begin to process the tragedy, parents are faced with helping our children process their grief, confusion and fear.
Many parents struggle with what to say to our children after a traumatic event.
Many parents wonder how best to support our children-especially when we haven’t yet had the chance to fully process the events ourselves.
I would like to extend my deepest sympathy and continued prayers for everyone affected by the floods, especially the children and their families.
I have collected some mental health resources for parents and a few tips that I hope will be a helpful starting point.

1. Tailor the conversation to their age and maturity level.
2. Start the conversation but let your child ask the questions when/if they are ready. Ask them to elaborate on their question so you don’t give a more detailed answer than they need.
3. Answer questions honestly but you don’t have to give every detail if that’s not what they are asking for.
4. “I don’t know” is an acceptable answer especially if you can follow it with either “but I do know that right now you are safe, and I am here with you”
5. Monitor their exposure to news stories - younger kids will do best if parents digest the stories and then tell the kids. Older kids may be better able to handle news stories, but too much can be overwhelming.
6. Trust in the fact that if you care enough about having a supportive and thoughtful conversation with your kids then that’s really all you need.
There are many great online resources if you want to dive deeper into supporting your child or if you think they might need more support.

As parents, we always want to provide our children with support and reassurance. But this pandemic and resulting disruption to our daily lives is unprecedented in modern times so it can be difficult to know how to handle it. In my practice I’ve seen a lot of the same anxiety surfacing as we approach transitions toward “normal” that I saw as we transitioned to our pandemic life. So, what can we do to support our children and how can we answer their questions without causing more fear and anxiety?
Connect with our blog at for a 7 minute read about the most productive ways to provide support for yourself and your children during these unprecedented times. (Link to blog in bio)

Today is National Women Physicians Day! February 3rd is the birthday of Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell, the first woman physician in the United States. Today we celebrate the unique contributions that women make in medicine while at the same time facing unique challenges from often carrying the majority of household responsibilities.
As a physician, I am grateful for the women before me who paved the way for me to be able to work in a field I love. As a patient, I am thankful for the amazing women physicians who have cared for me and my family.
I’m tagging some who are some of the most hard-working and intelligent doctors I know. Who are some of your favorite women physicians on IG? Tag them below!!
Happy Women Physicians Day everyone!

Have you heard of spiritual bypass? You may know about numerous ways that people may try to avoid painful emotions. But did you know that we can even use spirituality to “bypass” negative emotions. People may do this because they feel the emotion is not important, destructive or unacceptable for a person of faith. Although faith can be positive for our mental and physical health, when it’s used in this way it prevents us from the necessary growth and life changes that could come from feeling and dealing with the emotion. If you don’t feel it you can’t heal it! This week I did an interview with an old friend, Dominic Encinias, Pastor and founder of The Heart Church for his upcoming message series on faith & mental health. Unfortunately with COVID we aren’t able to do the service in person, but it will air on YouTube tomorrow at 9:30 & 11am central. Click the link in my bio to watch!
