70% of your immune system lives in your gut. 🦠✨

Why it matters: A healthy gut doesn’t just help with digestion — it also plays a huge role in fighting infections, reducing inflammation, and even supporting your mood and mental health.

✅ Ways to support gut health:

Eat more fiber-rich foods (whole grains, beans, fruits, veggies)

Include probiotics like yogurt, kefir, or fermented foods (kimchi, sauerkraut)

Stay hydrated

Limit processed foods and excess sugar

See your doctor if you have ongoing digestive issues

Taking care of your gut = taking care of your whole body. 🌿

☕ Myth vs. Fact: Coffee & Hypertension

Many patients worry that even one cup of coffee will worsen their blood pressure. While caffeine can cause a temporary rise in BP, studies show that moderate, habitual coffee consumption is not associated with sustained hypertension and may even have cardiovascular benefits.

✅ Clinical Pearl: Focus lifestyle counseling on sodium restriction, physical activity, and weight management rather than eliminating coffee. For patients who are especially sensitive to caffeine, moderation or timing adjustments may help.

🌟 Mentor Monday Spotlight 🌟

Meet Edwin Paul, an incoming second-year medical student who recently completed a 4-week Internal Medicine preceptorship with Dr. Akkanti. From rounding in the hospital ICU to working in the outpatient clinic, Edwin gained hands-on clinical experience and deeper insight into patient care.

During clinic days, he pre-rounded on patients, conducted focused histories, and presented his cases to Dr. Akkanti. These experiences helped strengthen his clinical reasoning, sharpen his communication skills, and build confidence in a real-world setting.

Here’s to the mentors who guide the next generation of physicians, and to the students who step boldly into the future of medicine. 💙

Fast Fact: Just 30 minutes of brisk walking a day can lower your risk of heart diseaseby more than 20%

And the best part? You don’t have to do it all at once, break it into 10-minute sessions and still get the benefits.

Your heart will thank you. 🫀✨

September marks Sepsis Awareness Month — an important reminder that time matters when it comes to sepsis.

Sepsis is the body’s overwhelming and life-threatening response to infection. Each year, it affects 1.7 million adults in the U.S. and contributes to nearly 270,000 deaths.

⚠️ Why it matters:

Sepsis can develop rapidly, even from common infections.

Mortality risk increases with every hour treatment is delayed.

Early recognition and intervention (fluids, antibiotics, supportive care) saves lives.

🧠 Remember FAST for early recognition:

Fever or chills

Altered mental status (confusion, disorientation)

Shortness of breath

Tachycardia (rapid heart rate)

As internists, we are often the first to identify subtle warning signs. Raising awareness empowers both clinicians and the community to act quickly.

Let’s spread the word this month and help save lives. 🩸

✨ Wellness Wednesday: Paging Dr. You! ✨

📟 Paging Dr. You: This is an urgent call to check in with your most important patient—yourself. Between rounds, patient charts, and endless pages, it’s easy to forget that self-care is part of providing the best care.

Here’s your official self-check protocol:
💙 Mood: Take a moment—how are you really feeling right now? Notice any tension or frustration without judgment.
🧠 Mind: Feeling scattered or overwhelmed? Close your eyes, inhale for 4 counts, exhale for 6. Repeat 3 times to reset your focus.
💪 Energy: Low on energy? Stand up, roll your shoulders, or take a one-minute walk—even a small movement helps.
🙏 Gratitude: Identify one small thing you’re grateful for today—a kind colleague, a smooth procedure, or even a perfect cup of coffee.

✅ Pro Tip: Treat this self-check like a vital sign—frequent monitoring keeps your mind and body in top condition. Your patients rely on you—but you need to rely on yourself too.

💌 Challenge: Comment below with your “Paging Dr. You” moment today. What small action did you take to care for yourself?

In the Texas summer heat, your body can lose up to 1.5 liters of sweat per hour during outdoor activity!

Even just 1-2% dehydration (meaning you’ve lost that percent of your body weight in fluids) can lead to fatigue, poor concentration, headaches, and dizziness.

Don’t wait until you’re thirsty! You’re already dehydrated. Keep a water bottle with you and sip regularly, especially if you're outside.
