Everyone experiences labor differently. Here are some tell tale signs that may indicate it’s time to meet your new bundle of joy!

If walking or talking is too much during a contraction.

If your water breaks.
- Make sure you tell your health care team what time your water broke, what color is was, and if you experienced any contractions!

If you’re afraid that something is not right.

If you feel like the baby is moving less than normal.

If you have bright red bleeding.

If you’re noticing the contractions are getting longer, stronger, and closer together.

If you’re not able to nap or distract yourself.

Birth support entails having an individual or a group of individuals available to assist you both before and during childbirth. Their main purpose is to ensure your comfort, guide you through the birthing process, reassure you about the normalcy of the experience, advocate for you when necessary, and provide essential information about your care. Having a trusted support person present is crucial and can significantly alleviate the challenges of childbirth. The presence of a support person reduces the likelihood of needing a cesarean section, as oxytocin levels increase while stress and fear decrease.

Last week, we discussed items to pack for your hospital stay. Now, let’s delve into what the hospital provides. Upon your arrival, you’ll be provided with essential amenities such as gowns, towels, pads, underwear, peri ice packs, heat and ice packs for general aches and pains, socks, peri bottles, witch hazel pads (in case of a vaginal birth), and an abdominal binder (if you had a c-section). These items are standard across all hospitals. However, if you find something missing, don’t hesitate to inquire with your healthcare team. While some hospitals may offer additional supplies, these essentials are guaranteed. Take a look at our previous post about what to bring to the hospital to complement the essential items provided by the hospital.

Getting your older kids ready for a new baby can be an enjoyable experience, yet it can also pose its challenges. They might exhibit signs of regression, which is normal. Here are some approaches to help your older children get ready for their new sibling.

- Let your child be amongst the first people you share the news with

- Reminisce with your older child about their birth/newborn stage/how much you enjoyed becoming their mama

- Explain what it will be like when the new baby comes home

- Prepare your older sibling for what the hospital experience will be like

- Let your child choose a nickname for the baby and allow them to talk to the baby while still in the tummy

- Prepare your home ahead of time

- Give a gift for the older sibling when the baby is born

- Plan for the baby meeting their sibling for the first time

- Try to keep the first meeting between the new siblings positive

- Sibling classes

- Read books about bringing home a new baby/how to be a great older sister/brother

Come with me to the hospital to support one of our mamas during labor. It was such a beautiful experience and this mama was a trooper! Birth support is so important. Studies show that having an advocate/consultant in the hospital can greatly improve the birth experience.
