Anointing with essential oils is a ritual that has been practiced for centuries. It is a sacred rite that is still practiced in the Catholic Church today during the sacraments of baptism, confirmation, holy orders, and anointing of the sick.
In biblical Israel, it was believed that when you anointed a king with holy oil, the spirit of the Lord (“Ruach YHWH”) came down on him and blessed him to be God’s representative on earth. This is why the three kings brought the Christ Child the gifts of gold (believed by some to be balsam oil), frankincense and myrrh. This act confirmed that Jesus was, in fact, believed to be the Messiah. In Hebrew, the word messiah means “anointed one”.
