Dearest

Thank you for ten mind blowing years!

Initially intended as a rental you immediately became my Big Medicine, my Magic Carpet. Then, day after day upon lands which aren’t for sale at any price, you escorted me from gypsy to feral. You’re mobile chic, high comfort and divine booster, anytime, anywhere. Hi Ho Silver, Away!

From poet Sir Richard Burton:

Of the gladdest moments in human life, methinks, is the departure upon a distant journey into unknown lands. Shaking off with one mighty effort the fetters of habit, the leaden weight of routine, the cloak of many cares, and the slavery of home, one feels once more happy. The blood flows with the fast circulation of childhood. Afresh dawns the morn of life.

If Albrecht Durer, Stephen Hawking and Charles Darwin could blend into one body of work, it would look a lot like Irene Hardwicke Olivieri’s gems. Mama Mia, you are way out of this world, Irene. Perhaps even better than your paintings are your writings which reflect your endless, voracious curiosity about the mysteries of life, nature, the cosmos. Lucky me, I walked in to the last day of her show at Evoke Contemporary and she was there. Instead of hyping herself she is a most enthusiastic, walking talking encyclopedia of the mysteries of our planet. Modest, she wouldn’t even let me photo her with her works. Brava!

Dear Creede Repertory Theater,

You are fabulous. Every summer for years I have trekked to Creede for your shows and been thrilled to tell everyone about how terrific you are.

About a month ago I attended three of your shows. They were the first large indoor events I have attended in 2.5 years. You required masks but the real reason I felt safe(r) is because I have none of the risk factors for poor Covid outcomes. So I went. And relished every moment. But I wondered because I sat arm to arm indoors for hours with hundreds of others hooting and howling with laughter.

Two days after departing Creede I developed fever and body aches, nausea, fatigue. Slept for two days and hydrated, by the third day I was hiking a few miles at 10k feet but planning departure for intense sunshine, dry air and lower elevation to more fully recover. It wasn’t fun but it wasn’t a nightmare. Again yours are the only large indoor events I have attended in over 2 years, and I live a distanced, outdoor life; so tag, you’re it.

Got the email yesterday that your shows are cancelled until the end of the month because of a Covid outbreak amongst your crew. Of course I was not surprised at all but I hope you are all ok, and I wish like hell you’d put your remaining shows outdoors, like last year, so all can perform and enjoy without worry or getting sick. Might you please consider that?

I called yesterday to ask if you were going to put remaining shows outdoors because I want to return to see LeVour in his three shows. The answer was no, indoor shows will resume and masks will still be required.

Please reconsider the beauty and splendor of your outdoors with safety and no worries for your backdrop. Masks won’t get me back to Creede. Maybe I am not alone in that regard.

Respectfully yours, D.

For any who might like to check out my newsletter…for good reason it has been 2.5 years since I uttered a peep. The evidence is clear. I didn’t sign up for this. 20 years ago I changed my habits to avoid indefinite rounds of chemotherapy after realizing I had been trained to keep myself sick. At least the American Academy of Nutrition and Dietietics has corrected and now many registered dietitians are taught the fundamentals of using food as medicine, or poison. “As per Everyday Health, registered dietitian Deirdre Earls has followed a vegan diet for years...”

Not just no, but he— no. I have never been vegan nor vegetarian in my life. Plant based, yes (for 20 years next month!), and 20 years of science and outcomes have only convinced me more by the day that for those who seek to optimize their health and longevity while minimizing or even eliminating dependence upon “healthcare”, plant based, Whole Foods are the dietary ticket. But neither vegan and not vegetarian is required. Lasting health requires sustainability; most vegans and vegetarians quit. I eat whatever I want whenever I feel like it, but every day I practice fundamentals and allow flexibility. For example today’s divine green chile cheddar cheese hamburger from Chile Line Depot includes beef from cattle grown on the proprietor’s ranch. They make their own buns. And the wedges are cut from whole potatoes while you wait. This place is a ritual stop to and from anyplace north of New Mexico, and I’m posting this as proof that no way am I vegan nor will I ever be a vegan. Cheers!

The most remote monastery in the Western Hemisphere, skirting the wild and scenic Chama River, is utterly transcendent, beyond photographs. Thanks to these monks whose lives revolve around prayer and work, I can finally appreciate why Gregorian chants were sung for thousands of years. Like any legit pilgrimage the road there is treacherous and long, then the inspiration defies logic. Those interested may wish to stay at the guesthouse for their silent retreats amongst the painted cliffs, infinite starry skies, farm animals, and merry scholars who radiate pure joy. https://christdesert.org/about/

Compared to Chaco Canyon and its outliers including Aztec and Salmon Ruins, and Mesa Verde, too, Gila Cliff Dwellings were exceedingly well concealed. In a steep, narrow canyon offering shade almost all day, one could not spot these cliff dwellings until almost upon them. More than ever I wondered what on earth made them willing to haul every drop of water and food up those cacti covered canyon walls wearing nothing but handwoven yucca sandals. Soot on the roof of the cave indicates human presence for over 10,000 years, but the Mogollon built rock homes there about a thousand years ago, only to keep moving a few decades later. Why? I suspect there is a lot that the rangers and volunteers at our national parks don’t or can’t say, for a variety of reasons. The only reason that would prompt me to make anywhere near the effort the Mogollon made would be fear for my life. Of course slavery and bo***ge in America began hundreds or thousands of years before Jamestown in 1619, but nowhere have I ever seen so much effort to hide. The ancient Mogollon share the same language family as the Aztecs, the Uto Aztecan language family , and nearby Aztecs of that time in what is now Mexico routinely celebrated human sacrifice and cannibalism. Maybe? https://mexicodailypost.com/2021/09/25/the-imperial-cannibalism-of-the-aztecs-an-uncomfortable-truth-for-critics-of-the-conquest/

Hearty congratulations to Tanya Gange and her traveling circus. In a world of fake props to artificially enhance, this merry band of three are acrobats, Cirque du Soleil style contortionists, musicians, singers, comedians, chefs, dancers, and set makers who play every role from the back of a two horse trailer. Joy, levity and soup are the gifts they bring. Bravissimo!

Holy cow, a Texas sized treasure trove on El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro, the oldest historic trail in the USA. (The trail itself predates Euro influence by thousands of years, and that history is enbedded in El Camino Real, too.) Ysleta Mission, Socorro Mission, Presidio de San Elizario…an amateur anthropologist’s bliss point. I had no clue, until today! If this is your thing check out Al Borrego and his trips to Camino sites in Mexico. He is working towards getting San Elizario on the UNESCO list of world heritage sites. www.culturalheritagesociety.com

It was a surreal day to visit the US Border Patrol Museum. The good, the bad and the ugly, in reverse:
1. The Ugly: Instead of doing her job, Kamala Harris attended the inauguration of Honduran President Xiomara Castro today. He’s socialist with an inner cricle defined by problematic statements about Jewish people and Israel. Today Kamala Harris was celebrating with anti-Semitics (on Holocaust Remeberance Day, no less) the politics of yet another socialist country where people risk their lives to escape and make it to the United States. Meanwhile Kamala’s boss, who is also unwilling to defend our border, and demoralized our military by deserting Americans in Afghanistan then gifting the Taliban $85B in weapons, has our service people on high alert to defend another country’s border.
2. The Bad: It really hurt to visit the museum honoring the women, men and dogs who risk their lives every day to preserve the goodness that the USA offers all Americans and the world. Every day they slow a tsunami of human and s*x trafficking, every day they thwart a tsunami of trade in lethal narcotics and illegal weapons. They catch and stop people on terrorists lists. In 2021 seventeen Border Patrol agents died in the line of service, in 2020 four died in the line of service. They followed Biden’s order for Covid vaccine mandates (later deemed illegal by our highest court) then were willfully put in harm’s way as our government enabled millions to enter illegally with no vaccine requirements at all. Subsequently more than 4 times as many Border Patrol agents died in 2021 than 2020.
3. The Good: There are no sufficient words to express the greatness of those who, no matter the betrayal, no matter the odds, and no matter the personal cost, persist in serving something greater than themselves. With all my heart, thank you.

This is the reality of “Healthcare is a Right” and “Care. No Matter What.” following the 2021 covid vaccine mandates for healthcare workers. This is a photo of the parking lot taken yesterday at Sierra Vista Hospital in Truth or Consequences, NM. Like everyone else they’re in a pandemic, too. But so many skilled healthcare workers were fired or quit over the covid vaccine mandate that entire departments have been closed due to insufficient staff. For the same reason hospitals everywhere are now so desperate for healthcare workers that they are asking covid positive employees to work, willfully putting covid positive employees in proximity with hospital patients, by definition our most vulnerable. Having served tuberculosis, AIDS and hepatitis patients, never in my life did I think I would see hospitals turn the tables and put contagious employees in contact with patients. Truth or Consequences is a very aged community of people who contributed taxes their entire working life for this hospital. And now they have no cardiac care nor surgery departments. The nearest fully functioning hospital is 85 miles away.

Long live La Salle Academy through the sands of time! This weekend is the .NYC 5K which Scout & I are doing from a landing strip that drops near Great Sand Dunes National Park in CO. When Pop was a foster child and student at La Salle (which is still in NYC’s East Village), it was known as “La Salle Academy for Poor & Troubled Boys”. Pop’s parents were Irish immigrants, and in his day the Irish of NYC endured greater discrimination than blacks. To their credit La Salle drilled into Pop that public opinion was no excuse for individual mediocrity, and that expecting reward based upon circumstance, instead of character and merit, is a sure path to failure for one and for all. Instead of patronizing and reinforcing Pop’s disadvantages, La Salle required exceptional performance. And they still do. My entire life has benefited tremendously from La Salle’s dogged ethic. Thank you, La Salle Academy! .NYC

It’s no accident that Mount Rushmore is in the Black Hills, the land of Crazy Horse, Red Cloud and Sitting Bull. Washington and Jefferson refused the pay more, get less edicts from a demented King. Roosevelt began conservation of public lands as National Parks. Lincoln was the GOP president who ended slavery and ultimately died along with 300,00+ others for living the American ideals of individual liberty. But the shoulder they stand on here is the spirit of the great Lakota Chiefs who against all odds refused surrender, and understood that the price of “white man’s handouts” was their freedom, their way of life, their everything.

For nine years the health and happiness booster found living in nature has made doing so irresistible. Thankfully the SW quadrant of Colorado has been wide open for 14 months. In addition to their admirable lack of angst these folks have been unstoppable, utterly unwilling to accept sedentary as a solution for anything. I would like to thank the great people and the great state of Colorado for your endless inspiration. As one who hikes 4 miles every day in mountains somewhere across America the Beautiful, I have been lapped countless times by very fit 80 year old Coloradans. Whether hiking 500 miles up and down mountain ranges across your state, or 2000 miles on CDT at age 69 from Mexico to Canada, or hiking in the dark for hours so you can start Mt Elbert at 5am, or rustling stubborn and shaggy cattle to a better spot, or biking racing with a smile above the tree line at 12,500 feet in a hail storm, or carrying a gigantic SUP board two miles without compliant because wind pushed you across a lake, or fly fishing alone and determined in raging waters, or racing burros to honor miners of yesterday and make us laugh, or taking time to honor the Mt Huron you are about to climb, you remain electrified. I salute you and yours, Colorado. A special thanks to the Colorado Women Fly Fishers for introducing me to the splendors of Twin Lakes.
