If you've got wicked PMS or hormonal acne, you may already suspect something's off with your hormones. But when our hormones aren't happy they can cause some uncomfortable symptoms you might not expect. Here are a few less common signs of hormone imbalance and the hormone that might be at play:

1. Hair loss - testosterone (or its more aggressive metabolite, DHT)
2. Low libido - testosterone
3. Insomnia - cortisol, a.k.a. the stress hormone
4. Headaches - estrogen (your own or synthetic from the pill)
5. Weight gain - estrogen, cortisol, insulin, thyroid hormone

Have you experienced one (or more) of these symptoms? Let me know in the comments!

You may have heard this from your mom, neighbor, or even your OBGYN but this statement is actually FALSE. Thinking that the pill balances hormones is a common misconception because for some people, the pill does reduce symptoms of hormones imbalance like acne, moodiness, or cramps, and, if the pill, patch, or ring is taken as prescribed, bleeding happens every 28 days.

The truth is that the pill doesn’t balance hormones. It switches them off completely. I remember hearing in my twenties that the pill made your body think it was pregnant. A more accurate description would be that the pill induces a state similar to a temporary chemical menopause. Testing hormone levels while on the pill shows menopausal levels of estrogen and progesterone. And the pill doesn’t regulate periods because the bleeding that happens on the sugar pill week isn’t anything close to the period that happens from a menstrual cycle. It’s called a pill bleed, or bleeding caused by stopping the synthetic hormones.

The assumption that the pill balances hormone levels is a dangerous one for a couple of reasons.

Reason 1-it means that the root cause(s) of your symptoms remain unchecked. Gut infection contributing your PMS symptoms? It continues to rage. Blood sugar imbalances affecting your cycle? The synthetic estrogen in the pill can increase insulin resistance in some people.
Not addressing the root causes can lead to other conditions down the road, like thyroid disease, autoimmune conditions, skin problems, and more.

Reason 2- the hormones made by our body are actually incredibly beneficial for heart, brain, and bone health. Taking those out of circulation for years, and often decades, negatively impacts overall health.

It is important to understand the full implications of believing the pill is fixing the problem and get the proper support and information. If this is something that you have previously been told, please share your experience or ask your questions in the comments section.

Yes. The answer is YES. And no, your fridge filter is not cutting it.

Last week, the U.S. government released a study that revealed that nearly half of tap water in the U.S. contains harmful "forever chemicals" a.k.a. PFAS. This is disturbing, y'all.

PFAS (per- and polyfluoralkyl substances) are called forever chemicals because they don't break down in the environment or our bodies...like, ever. And PFAS have been linked to numerous health conditions including cancer, thyroid disease, fertility problems, and delayed development in children.

Where these PFAS are coming from and how they are getting into the water is a topic for another day. Today, let's focus on what we can do to minimize our exposure from the water we drink.

The most commonly used water filters are the ones in the refrigerator or pitcher filters like Brita and Pur. Unfortunately, these do nothing to reduce PFAS in the water you and your family are drinking. To get rid of these, you'll need to upgrade to a reverse osmosis or activated carbon filtration system. There are whole house, under sink, countertop and pitcher options.

Favorite filter brands: Aquatru, Aquasana, Clearly Filtered, Berkey

We've all been there...the week full of late night carb binges, yelling at your family, crying every time a Subaru commercial comes on. Then you start your period and gratefully realize that "unhinged carboholic" was just a transient state and not just your personality. According to the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Sevices, 90% (NINETY percent!!) of women experience premenstrual symptoms.

But couldn't our periods come without all the drama? We've been taught since middle school that PMS is just par for the course, but what if all the mood swings, cravings, cramping are actually your body's signal that something is amiss? The National Institute of Health and The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists state that the menstrual cycle reflects a person's overall health status and can be thought of as a “fifth vital sign,” along with blood pressure, body temperature, heart rate, and respiratory rate. PMS is the canary in the coal mine. It's not the problem, it's the warning signal.

Which PMS symptom have you accepted as normal but would love to get rid of? Let me know in the comments!

Hi friends! I'm so glad you're here! I have so much I want to share with you about health, hormones, and motherhood.

But first, I should probably introduce myself. I'm Camille Fish and I help moms eliminate PMS so they can feel like themselves and show up as the parent they want to be, no matter what time of the month it is. I work with clients across the country using functional lab testing, personalized nutrition and lifestyle shifts, and targeted supplementation.

I'm a mom of 2, maker of infinite snacks, boo boo kisser, wannabe hiker but afraid of bugs, coffee enthusiast. I love making people laugh and helping women feel great. Thanks for being here. 💕
