Deep Massage Society

Deep Massage Society Professional FB page of David Lauterstein, co-author, The Memory Palace of Bones & Deep Massage Book

While I enjoy "Deep Massage Society", over the years I have become less happy with facebook. When I post something here, due to facebook algorithms, many people who follow this page, never receive the writings. So, two years ago I started a free newsletter, "Putting the Soul Back in the Body". It is there that I put virtually all of my new writings, that previously would have been on Deep Massage Society. So if you like this page, and want to assure that you will receive basically all my new writing, please subscribe to the free newsletter - I think you'll enjoy it even more! https://www.david-lauterstein.com/newsletter-signup

The ideas on this page and in the newsletter are drawn from a similar perspective as my teaching and my book - The Deep Massage Book, subtitled "How to Combine Structure and Energy in Bodywork", which singularly explores a new philosophy and practice of massage, describing an approach to touch therapy that affects clients deeply, not necessarily with more pressure, but with a more profound and vital connection. In a world where virtual reality holds prominence, hunger for the experience of actual reality and kindness becomes more pronounced and urgently necessary.

Hi Everyone, I'm happy to know that already we have 11 people for the ZB I that I'm teaching in Austin, Oct. 23-26. I love to have one table-assistant! It's always a great learning and community experience!
I'll take names and decide on this by end of next week, before I go to Maine (on Oct. 4).

CORE ZERO BALANCING IN MAINE - COMING RIGHT UP!

The next Zero Balancing class I'll be teaching is in Maine - at the Downeast School of Massage. This is the fundamental Core ZB course - all in just 7 days - ZB I and II - Oct. 6-12. We're about half full with room for more.

ZB is an incredible therapeutic tool, but also studying it and the groups that form make it an initiatory experience. This comes from the humble but deep spiritual source of ZB, Dr. Fritz Smith, and from the focus of ZB, which is the core of the body, mind, and spirit - the wisdom that lives in our very bones.

WHAT "FREELY MOVABLE JOINTS" TELLS ME

Each movement in Mahler's 3rd Symphony's has a wonderful title: 1. Pan Awakens, Summer Marches In; 2. What the Flowers in the Meadow Tell Me; 3. What the Animals in the Forest Tell Me; 4. What Man Tells Me; 5. What the Angels Tell Me; and 6. What Love Tells Me.

The class I am teaching, "Freely Movable Joints," seems to have infinite potential titles for our movements:
for example:
1. What the feet and ankles tell me about walking on earth
2. What the knees tell me - you use me all the time, but don't love me enough
3. What hips tell me about dancing.
4. What the shoulders tell me about reaching out.
5. What the elbow shares with the knees.
6. What the wrist and hands tell me about writing the truth.
7. What the jaw tells me about the songs I sing.

Each of us has many things each joint tells us. When we listen to what they have to say, our lives are that much richer.

FREELY MOVABLE JOINTS - SEPT. 18-21

Each joint in our body is like a holograph. In a hologram, if you shine a light through even a small fragment of it, you will see the whole picture. Freely Movable Joints shines a light through each joint, through each of our inner bridges. This illuminates the whole person.

Integrated into the basic ZB Protocol it will give your work an unprecedented completeness as well as very specific ways to address symptomatic issues in the feet, ankles, elbow, hip, SI, shoulder girdle, arms, wrists, hands and head.

If you've had ZB I and II, FMJ is a must!

Interesting piece on the 10th session of Rolfing. It makes me think, of course, that in a way, Zero Balancing starts where Rolfing ends.

The Tenth Hour of Structural Integration: Finding "The Line"
The tenth session represents the culmination of the classic Structural Integration "Ten Series" - the moment where all previous work integrates around the central organizing principle that Dr. Ida Rolf called "the Line."
The Central Theme: The Rolf "Line"
At the core of Dr. Rolf's teachings is the organization of the body around a central vertical axis - "the Line" - that runs along the front of the body, extending into the earth and spanning above the head towards the heavens. In Structural Integration practice, the human body is seen as designed to thrive when oriented around this central vertical axis in alignment with Earth's gravitational field.
"The Line" is more than just physical alignment - it's an invisible relationship between oneself and the environment. As Dr. Rolf described it: vertical awareness is key. Being at peace within oneself and with one's environment simultaneously is what we mean when we say "the Line." This represents the union of human energy with the energy of the world.
This is why it's called "Finding the Line" - it's not just about structural alignment, but about discovering a way of being in the world that is both grounded and uplifted, stable yet dynamic. During the ten-session series, the body is integrated around "the Line," and perception of "the Line" becomes something that can be practiced and cultivated in daily life.
The tenth hour is ultimately about allowing natural, effortless movement to emerge from proper structural organization - the union Dr. Rolf strove for between human energy and the energy of the world.

DON'T MISS "FREELY MOVABLE JOINTS" - ZB CLASS - SEPT. 18-21 IN AUSTIN!

FREELY MOVABLE JOINTS has again captured my imagination. How do you evoke freedom and delight in all your joints is the question it answers. Freedom and light in your every movement?

Your ability to interact not only with foundation and semi-foundation joints is fundamental. We all need to experience the joy of enhancing the energy flow and spaciousness between every key joint of the body. Freely Movable Joints will add completeness to your work and life and to every ZB. I am so looking forward to teaching this course (gratefully with the assistance of Sheila Palmer).

I look forward to seeing you there in Austin for this rare opportunity to learn, reconnect, and add these enormously useful and fascinating fulcrums to your work.

(this does require having previously taken at least ZB I and II)

“We are great fools. “He has passed over his life in idleness,” say we: “I have done nothing today.”

What? Have you not lives? This is not only the fundamental, but the most illustrious of all your occupations.

“Had I been put to the management of great affairs, I should have made it seen what I could do.”

Have you known how to meditate and manage your life, you have performed the greatest work of all. For a man to show and set out himself, nature has no need of fortune; she equally manifests herself in all stages, and behind a curtain as well as without one. Have you known how to regulate your conduct, you have done a great deal more than he who has composed books.

Have you known how to take repose, you have done more than he who has taken cities and empires.”

~ Michel de Montaigne

Bones were certainly among the first musical instruments and vital to certain forms of prayer, ritual, community and celebration, for example, the ram’s horn, “shofar” in the Jewish tradition. The ribcage was the first xylophone. And the beating of drums on taut skins likely made acoustic accompaniment to the cave painters and the singers of tales. Hollowed out clavicles became the first flutes.
