“Many of our patients have tried everything else. That’s when you really have to start thinking differently.”

For Chelsey Ortman, M.D., every case of pediatric epilepsy is an opportunity to rethink what’s possible, as well as a reminder of how much is still unknown.

That mindset guides both her patient care and her research. A board-certified pediatric neurologist at UT Health Austin Pediatric Neurosciences at Dell Children's Medical Center and faculty member at Dell Medical School - UT Austin, Dr. Ortman is part of a collaborative team working to expand options for children with treatment-resistant epilepsy, especially those who may not qualify for surgery.

Dr. Ortman is helping shape a new generation of epilepsy care, one rooted in innovation. And while her work is deeply technical, its goal is profoundly human —to give every child the best chance at a healthier future.

Best of 2025: Serving the smallest Texans 🤘

The Texas Center for Pediatric and Congenital Heart Disease, a clinical partnership between UT Health Austin and Dell Children's Medical Center, achieved a landmark success earlier this year with the implantation of a Berlin Heart device in the world’s youngest patient.

This complex, life-saving procedure serves as a powerful illustration of the benefits of academic medicine within our community. The integration of advanced research, specialized training and innovative technology will be a hallmark of The University of Texas at Austin’s emerging medical center, ensuring the delivery of truly world-class care to Central Texas.

When Kelli found out her mom, Julie, needed a kidney transplant, she immediately offered hers. Best of 2025: “I figured, worst case, I’d just be a little dilated when I got there. But as soon as I sat in the waiting room, I suddenly felt the urge to push.”

What started as Katharina's 40-week prenatal appointment quickly turned into Baby Elliott's birthday, with a multidisciplinary team of UT Health Austin's Women's Health and Ambulatory Surgery Center clinicians coming together to guide her through a seamless delivery.

After Baby Elliott’s safe arrival, UT Health Austin OB-GYN Dr. Justine Reilly accompanied Katharina and her husband in the ambulance to Ascension Seton Medical Center, remaining by her side to complete her post-birth care.

To commemorate the unforgettable day, the care team later gifted the family a baby onesie signed by everyone involved in the delivery. https://bit.ly/4aT2Dyz

Best of 2025: Making heart history in Central Texas 🤘

The Institute for Cardiovascular Health, a clinical partnership between Ascension Seton and UT Health Austin, made medical history this year as the second clinical practice in the world to perform major aortic surgery using a revolutionary new aortic stent graft flushing technique.

What made this surgery especially pioneering was the use of carbon dioxide flushing, a departure from the traditional heparinized saline. This novel technique minimizes the introduction of excess oxygen and air bubbles, which significantly reduces the risk of microembolic events — addressing one of the most critical risks in complex aortic surgery. The adoption of such advancements underscores the Institute's commitment to setting new global standards for cardiovascular treatment and safety in Central Texas.

This level of world-class innovation is made possible because of academic medicine, embedding research and education directly within clinical practice. The result? Accelerating the translation of scientific discovery into improved patient care. https://bit.ly/4bqwrRB
