🌟 New Pilot Study Highlights the Power of Community Health Workers for Dialysis Patients 🌟
A team led by Dr. Tessa Novick—alongside Michelle M. Osuna-Díaz, PhD—launched a 2-month intervention to support dialysis patients in Austin, TX, facing serious social challenges like housing insecurity, food insecurity, and lack of transportation.
📌 What They Did:
Community Health Workers (CHWs) helped 21 patients navigate local resources for housing, food, utilities, and transportation.
📉 What They Found:
✅ Fewer hospitalizations
✅ Reduced anxiety and depression
✅ Improved access to basic needs
This pilot shows that even short-term, community-based support can make a big difference in the lives of people with kidney failure. A larger trial is now needed to confirm these promising results.
👏 Huge thanks to DaVita Kidney Care for supporting recruitment and to NIDDK for funding this important work.
