Happy Dōng Zhì Everyone!!! Or should I greet you a happy “Hibernal Solstice”? Or Maybe a Happy Yalda… Or a Happy Festival of Saturnalia? Maybe a Merry Yule? Either Way, Happy Winter!
Today (at 9:03 a.m.) marks the precise moment of the deepest, darkest, longest moment of darkness of the solar cycle. Cool, huh?
While we say that this is “the first day of winter”, many cultures see this as the “mid-point” of winter. Or even the “First Day of Spring”. Why? Because from here on out, the days are getting longer and we begin our steady climb towards the warmth and light of spring and summer. (It may take a couple weeks for the temperatures to catch on and catch up, but still…) From here on out, the days are getting longer.
In virtually every culture around the world throughout history, this has always been one of the most important holidays. It offers us a moment to reflect on the cycles of life and seasons and how new life births eternal. We may be in the deepest, darkest moment of the year, but we can still see a glimpse… have a knowing that the night will end and spring will emerge with warmth and joy. Never fear your darkest moments because today reminds us that brighter, warmer, more cheerful days are ahead.
