Excerpt from this month's Ten Ox newsletter...

"One practice I’ve implemented for many years comes from Julia Cameron’s “The Artist’s Way.”

It’s called an “Artist’s Date,” and is, as she puts it, “a once-weekly adventure to do something fun" that is "solo, festive, and designed to fill your well" with inspiration.”

I found that a weekly date wasn’t sustainable with my schedule, so I’ve found that a monthly cadence is do-able. And, even at that pace, it’s a monthly struggle to make time for my inner artist, placing it as important among the many external demands of life.

Last week was just such a case. I was planning to go to the HOPE Outdoor Graffiti gallery - something I’ve been excited to explore for quite some time.

When it came to embark on the Artist Date, I looked it up on Google Maps, 23 minutes away!—and quickly started to pivot and make excuses. Maybe I could just swing by somewhere close and just keep it short. My wife and son needed my support, and that would give me time to help out at the house. Besides, I had a long to-do list, a newsletter to write, etc. I felt my spirit slump in the driver seat. The “be productive” part in me was winning the argument.

And then I felt a quiet voice whisper ‘GO’ - and I just committed. 23 minutes, who cares!

Five minutes down the road, the joyous sense of ADVENTURE kicked in. I still felt all the demands, the excuses, the “better” uses of my time - but I also felt an immediate ping of celebration as my inner artist got the message - I am worth 23 minutes of inconvenience! I am important! Play is important! Yay!

For my inner artist and I to have a strong, harmonious relationship—I have to show up. Which brings me to...

Saturday, May 30, I am hosting an in-person retreat called “Make Friends With Your Mind.” I will lead us through several tools and exercises all designed to explore and get to know your inner world.

We live in a busy world, with many demands on our time. And we all have parts of us that have been neglected, and are just waiting for the validation of saying YES, YOU ARE WORTH MY TIME.

Tomorrow night (Feb 4), join me at for this month's Integration Circle, 6-8pm

🌀

Have you ever felt insights arise during a medicine journey -- profound, beautiful, or even challenging -- and wondered how to carry them over into everyday life?

Do you notice certain protective parts of you, like the inner critic, the people-pleaser, or the caretaker, closing off or resisting what you discovered in those expanded moments?

Or perhaps you’re simply curious about learning tools to help you regulate, integrate, and connect more deeply with yourself and others.

Integration is where the real work of transformation happens. This experiential workshop is designed to help you bridge expanded awareness into embodied change, using a blend of Bio-Energetics, Gestalt, and Internal Family Systems (IFS) techniques to explore how different parts of us relate to healing, growth, and wholeness.

Led by Gestalt/IFS Coach, Joseph Mach, this evening invites both participants in Kuya’s Ketamine Program as well as anyone interested in self-work, embodiment, and community connection. Through movement, breath, and parts-based inquiry, you’ll learn how to honor what emerges during altered-state experiences, and bring it home to your daily life.

Excerpt from my August Newsletter (subscribe with link in bio):

Today I want to share a recent God-wink I experienced.

Because walking the spiritual path can sometimes feel discouraging - and for me, acknowledging moments of synchronicity and grace can provide counterweight to the difficult moments.

Difficult moments--such as traveling home on a crowded airplane with a toddler after spending 10 days visiting with family.

My wife and I are sleep deprived. I feel fried. My patience has already been maxed out multiple times.

We finally start to descend towards the Austin airport (the light at the end of the tunnel!), when the airplane hits a big patch of turbulence, and has to climb back up to higher altitude.

We circle. My wife shoots me a glance. Deep breaths.

The plane begins start to descend again; even heavier turbulence. The pilot pushes through this time, and I can feel the collective worry begin to bubble up as the plane lurches and jerks through the clouds.

I do my best to model a calm steadfastness.

Then, as the turbulence reaches its peak, totally unprovoked, the tiny voice next to me starts singing the cutest rendition of “Amazing Grace” that has ever been sung.

It’s straight out of a movie.

Several long seconds later, a bumpy landing and some relieved applause.

We make our way through the baggage gauntlet, and toward the rideshare pickup area, straining and buckling like overburdened donkeys.

Sweaty, exhausted, and with my patience once again at its edge, a phone notification pings through - “Angel is here. Look for the Red Rav4”

My wife spots the car. I sigh with relief.

In the backseat, my son asks “Is he Jesus?”

“No, his name is Angel.”

We laugh. Then, we look out the window to our right — and what do we see stretched out across the airport sky? Yep, a big ol’ rainbow.

Welcome (back) home.
