Sometimes life delivers a blow so strong it knocks us to the ground
In the aftermath, people often say: “I don’t feel like myself.” It’s more than sadness. It’s the sense of losing your ground, of not knowing who you are or what you mean — to yourself, to others, to the world.

I never realized that listening to others without listening to yourself could be so dangerous.

In fact, my thyroid specialist told me that female therapists who spend all day listening to others make up the largest portion of her client base.

We often clench and fight to stay upright when we feel ourselves falling apart, but collapsing (in a safe space) can actually be a powerful way to find support and strength. See below for a collapsing movement exercise, and check out our previous posts to learn more about yielding, collapsing’s less dramatic sister.

🍂🍃🍁🍃🍂

In this exercise, we are going to actually let ourselves collapse. Get a yoga mat or towel to put beneath you for comfort and find a quiet place where you won’t be interrupted for a while.

Lay down on your front, facing the floor. Instead of holding ourselves up at all, try to imagine that you collapsed, like you simply had no more energy to give.

Once you are lying there, start feeling the physical sensations under you on the surfaces of your body. You want to feel the underside of your hands, your cheek, your forehead, your chest, your pelvis, and even the tops of your legs. Within that sensation, you want to feel the support of the earth underneath you, holding you up. You then want to allow yourself to be cradled and rocked by this support.

Once you’ve sensed this support under you, I want you to take three deep, slow breaths, in and out. By now, you might be able to feel the tone of the front of your body against the mat. As we did in the yielding exercise, you can use this tone to come up, releasing our arms into the floor, and bringing our legs underneath us.

This is only one of the ways that you can find your support under you through collapsing. Check out our blog post, “Feel the Support of the Earth with a Movement Yielding Exercise—Part Two” for the next part of the exercise, which helps you find the support not just beneath you but all around you.

When yielding, rather than “relax,” as some suggest, it can actually be much more useful to put MORE energy into our body. You want to squeeze your body super tight, like a little seed, and then slowly release that tension until you start to feel support from the surface below you. Below is an exercise that you can do from home! You can also find this exercise in our blog under the title “Feel the Support of the Earth with a Somatic Movement Yielding Exercise-Part One” (in comments).

Put a blanket or yoga mat on the floor, then lie on your belly. Start to tense up your entire body. Your toes and fingers. Your hips and your belly. Your back and your face. Tense it all, squeezing tight. And then, very slowly, release all of that tension to a count of 10. You eventually want to find yourself completely flat, with the surface of your hands, chest, the fronts of your legs and arms, and your face and cheek firmly against the floor.

Now ask yourself some questions. What does the surface of your hands feel like on the floor? What about the surface of your feet? Your belly? Can you feel all of that support below you? Can you feel how the floor is supporting all of that weight?

Once you’ve relaxed into that, have an image of the earth beneath the mat. Go down deep into the very core of the earth. Now, imagine dropping a ball down to the core and it rebounding up to come under your body and support you. Enjoy that support.
Finally, let that rebound go underneath your hands so they push into the surface of the mat to lift you up. Then push into the front of your legs and your belly until you are sitting up. Now that you are sitting, try to feel the lower surface of your body against the floor and how it can yield into the earth.

This flips the whole, “world on your shoulders” idea on its head. Rather than you supporting the earth, let the earth support you. Yield into it through this exercise and your day might just become a bit more manageable.

This week we’ll be exploring ‘Yielding,’ one of the five core developmental movements (yield, push, reach, grasp, pull) that are crucial for healthy emotional and physical development. Stay tuned for more detailed exercises in the coming days and as always, reach out to explore@wholemovementcenter.com to share your body/self research and reflections with Margery! Wherever and however you are, we hope you’re finding a way to experience support, trust, and connection. We all need it, and with the right intention, help, and guidance, we can all find it in our bodies.

Slide three reads: In the context of developmental movement and somatic psychology, a “yielding movement pattern” involves surrendering to gravity, accepting support, and allowing oneself to be influenced, fostering trust and connection. Yielding is a core developmental movement that underlies all of the movements we do as adults. It allows us to actively respond to gravity and the tone in our body, especially the surface of our body that is in contact with the floor. Yielding can also help us relate to others, be more easy-going, and feel more support from the environment and our relationships. We’ll share more yielding exercises soon, but you can start practicing now by simply tensing and releasing your body. Where can you feel the earth supporting you? How does it feel?

Here at the Whole Movement Center “legs day” has a whole different meaning.

Our ongoing writing series, “Body Notes,” is inspired by listening and conspiring with the body, and body writing is an essential feature of our Whole Body Recovery Groups. Conversing with the body one part at a time is a powerful way to connect with the body/Self. Want to try it out? Here are some suggestions for how to research the connection between your legs and psyche. Margery would love to read what you write! Share to explore@wholemovementcenter.com
