Signs you might be dealing with autistic burnout
Autistic burnout happens after long-term masking, sensory overload, and pressure to function in a world not built for autistic nervous systems.
It can look like:
• extreme exhaustion
• loss of skills
• increased sensory sensitivity
• shutdowns or withdrawal
• feeling like you “can’t do” what you used to
Rest alone often isn’t enough — because the burnout isn’t from doing too much, it’s from having to be someone you’re not.
Recovery usually means:
• reducing demands
• increasing accommodations
• unmasking where possible
• rebuilding safety in the nervous system
This isn’t laziness.
This isn’t failure.
It’s a system asking for a different way of living.
