Ever walk into a noisy room and suddenly feel mentally exhausted?

Or reread the same sentence multiple times, lose track of conversations, or feel overwhelmed trying to process too much at once?

Cognitive overload can affect attention, processing speed, memory, communication, and energy levels in both TBI and neurodivergence. It’s often invisible to others, but very real for the individual experiencing it.

I recently wrote a new blog post discussing what cognitive overload can feel like, why it happens, and strategies that may help support the brain and reduce overstimulation.

I hope this blog helps individuals feel more understood and supported in their experiences with cognitive overload and overstimulation. đź’š

Every brain has different strengths, challenges, and ways of processing the world.

Understanding how the brain works can open the door to more effective support, communication, and confidence.

Two people can experience a similar neurological event or diagnosis and still have very different challenges, strengths, and recovery journeys.

Factors like the area of the brain affected, fatigue, pain, sleep, attention, premorbid skills, mental health, support systems, and everyday demands can all influence how someone functions day to day.

Recovery is rarely one-size-fits-all — which is why individualized, functional support matters. 💚

Not all concussion symptoms show up immediately after the injury.

Some signs can appear hours or even days later, including:
• headaches
• dizziness
• sensitivity to light/noise
• fatigue
• difficulty concentrating
• memory changes
• irritability

This is one reason monitoring after a suspected concussion is so important — especially for children and teens involved in sports.

All suspected concussions should be taken seriously. đź’š

Yes — your child can absolutely have both ADHD and dyslexia.

In fact, up to 40% of individuals with dyslexia also have ADHD — and they share a lot of the same signs:

Difficulty focusing and sustaining attention
Struggles with reading and written language
Challenges with organization and task completion

But they are NOT the same thing — and knowing the difference matters when it comes to getting your child the right support.

Dyslexia is one of the most common language-based learning differences, affecting an estimated 20% of the population.

Many dyslexic individuals are bright, capable, and highly creative — but may have difficulty with reading fluency, decoding, spelling, or written language tasks.

Because dyslexia is often misunderstood, many people grow up thinking they are “bad at school” rather than recognizing they simply learn differently.

With the right support and understanding, dyslexic individuals can absolutely succeed. đź’š

A lot of people are surprised to learn that speech therapy can support much more than speech alone.

Communication is connected to attention, reading comprehension, word retrieval, executive functioning, and social interaction — all of which can impact daily life in meaningful ways.

These challenges are not always visible, but they can still affect how someone moves through everyday life.

Not all sports concussions are obvious right away.

A child or teen may “look fine” after a hit but still experience symptoms involving attention, memory, processing speed, communication, balance, headaches, or fatigue later on.

All suspected concussions should be taken seriously — especially in children and teens whose brains are still developing.

When symptoms continue beyond the initial injury, support and rehabilitation can help. đź’š

After a brain injury, support is often framed as learning to “work around it.”

And while strategies are important, that’s not the whole picture.

Many cognitive-communication skills—like attention, memory, and word finding—can also be rebuilt and strengthened with the right support.

The brain is capable of change, growth, and improvement over time. đź’š

Doing well on brain games… but real life still feels harder?

Brain games can be a really helpful starting point. They can support attention, memory, and problem-solving.

But real life is different—it comes with distractions, fatigue, and constantly shifting demands.

After a brain injury, it’s not just about practicing a skill. It’s about being able to use it in everyday situations.

That’s often where things start to feel harder.

I wrote a blog breaking this down further and sharing what can help—something that comes up often in therapy. 💚

Ever walk into a room and forget why you went in?

We all do this sometimes—but after a brain injury, it can happen more often and feel more disruptive.

After TBI, this isn’t just “forgetfulness.” It’s often related to changes in attention and working memory. When your brain shifts focus—even briefly—the original intention may not get fully encoded or carried through.

That means the plan doesn’t always make it from “I’m going to do this” → doing it.

It’s a small, everyday example of how attention and memory work together—and how changes in these systems can show up in real life.

QUICK TIP: Before you move, pause and say the plan out loud (e.g., “I’m going to the kitchen to get water”). That brief verbal step can help hold the intention in place as you transition.
