In July 2009, Heidi was diagnosed with stage 4 endometrial sarcoma, with the most aggressive type of cells. During the next two years, she had 42 days of chemotherapy infusions and three major surgeries. Nevertheless, the relentless cancer kept coming back. After her third surgery, with no more chemotherapy options, she was told to get ready for hospice. Read her healing story here:

We at CWC are so grateful for each other and for all of you. On this day, while some sit down with loved ones to enjoy a meal full of Indigenous American foods and feel grateful for many reasons, we should all take the time to better understand where this tradition came from.

National Day of Mourning is an opportunity to remember and learn about the land we live on and the people who came before us, whose descendants are still fighting to have true history recognized.

🍫 Happy National Chocolate Day!!

Did you know that studies have shown that some types of chocolate may actually be beneficial to your health. Chocolate contains a phytochemical compound called flavonoids found in cocoa beans. A flavonoids is an antioxidant that can prevent or slow damage to cells caused by oxidative stress, in turn possibly acting as a cancer preventative.

The American Cancer Society recommends a high-quality dark chocolate with at least 70% cocoa and without any added ingredients such as caramel, peanut butter, marshmallow, etc. 🤎

Did you know?

• 1 in 8 women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime.

• Breast cancer is the most common cancer in American women, except for skin cancers. It is estimated that in 2021, approximately 30% of all new cancer diagnoses among women will be breast cancer.

• 63% of breast cancer cases are diagnosed at a localized stage (there is no sign that the cancer has spread outside of the breast), for which the 5 year survival rate is 99%.

• Although rare, men get breast cancer too. In 2021, an estimated 2,650 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer in the U.S.

• In recent years, we have seen a gradual reduction in female breast cancer incidence rates among women aged 50 and older. Death rates from breast cancer have been declining since about 1990, in part due to better screening and early detection, increased awareness, and continually improving treatment options.

Oncofertility bridges the studies of oncology and reproductive medicine to expand fertility options for cancer survivors. Many cancer treatments effect the ability to conceive, but there are options.

Whether you're looking for help figuring out your path, looking for support while undergoing cancer treatments, or are in remission and ready to get pregnant, The Cancer Wellness Center and its sister clinic, Sage Acupuncture are able to help guide you through the process. We work integratively with your physicians to give you the best care possible.

Acupuncture benefits cancer and fertility patients by relieving side effects of treatments, like nausea, headaches, pain relief, and stress management as well as helping to balance hormones, reduce inflammation and prepare the body to support a healthy pregnancy.

While it can sometimes feel like an endless, exhausting struggle while treating cancer, it’s important to remember to let yourself have those moments of down time and self-care. Slow down and try some of these tips to let your mind and body have a healthy break.
❤️ Be kind to yourself. Give yourself a hug and let go of self-critical thoughts.

❤️ Get some acupuncture treatments. Acupuncture can help relieve many symptoms that occur with cancer therapies.

❤️ Eat a plant based, organic diet. It will help clean your system of unwanted additives and chemicals, so your body can focus on healing.

❤️ Get outside for a few minutes each day. Fresh air and nature have been shown to reduce stress, lower blood pressure, and give your mental health a good boost.

❤️ Meditation can be a wonderful stress reducer and promotes healthy, deep breathing.

❤️ Try journaling. Getting your thoughts out on paper can help you work through them.

Along with regular physical exams with your doctor and mammograms, regular breast self-examination is a helpful tool we can use to screen for breast cancer.

When and how often should self-exams be done?
Once a month, about a week after your period has ended and your breasts are no longer tender or swollen. If you don’t have a period, pick one day per month, and mark it in your calendar. Over time, a monthly check will help you get familiar with your breasts, so you’ll recognize when something is different.

When to call the doctor:
Most breasts have some lumps, however if you find any suspicious lumps or changes described above, don’t hesitate to call your doctor.

Have you done your self-exam this month?

When meeting with your cancer care providers, it can feel overwhelming. Sometimes it’s hard to figure out what questions to ask and then remembering all of those questions while at your appointment and answers afterwards.

We suggest bringing a list of questions so you don’t forget them and write down the answers your given, so you can review them at a later time as well. If you are able to, bring someone with you to your appointment and assign them with taking notes and listening to the doctor. They may be able to help clarify or catch things you may miss.

What questions to ask is another matter. These are some questions that may be helpful to you…

• How do I contact my doctor, and who should I call first if I need something?

• What type of cancer do I have? Is it common in people my age?

• What are my treatment options?

• What clinical trials are available for me?

• What changes should I expect in my body because of the cancer? Are any of these changes permanent? And how can I cope with these changes?

• How will cancer treatment affect how I feel or look?

• How can I feel better, or avoid feeling worse?

• Will I be able to work during treatment? Or should I plan to take time off?

• Should I consider taking a medical leave from work?

• Will I be able to go back to work after treatment?

• Are there any restrictions or limitations once I go back to work?

What questions would you ask?

Does cancer run in your family? Hereditary cancer means that a person was born with a genetic mutation, or change, which makes this person at a greater risk of a cancer diagnosis. Hereditary cancer may also be called familial cancer or cancer in the family.

Information from your family’s cancer history may help your doctor determine whether you or others in your family may benefit from genetic counseling and testing. You should always share your health history with your doctors and re-review it with them at different stages of cancer treatment.

Have you collected your family cancer history yet?
