Embryological formation occurs within just 22 days of fertilization. This is where the foundation of each delicate ear takes shape!

During the fourth week of development, the stage is set with mesenchymal proliferation, also known as “hillocks,” originating from the first and second pharyngeal arches. This intricate dance of cellular activity gives rise to what we eventually recognize as the external ear. Six of these hillocks join forces to create the distinctive pinna, or outer ear.

Spotting a tongue tie in a newborn requires attentive observation by parents and healthcare professionals.

One of the most apparent signs is difficulty with breastfeeding, as the baby may have trouble latching properly or may frequently come off the breast during feeding.

Additionally, a tongue-tied infant may exhibit a limited range of tongue motion, such as the inability to extend the tongue beyond the lower gum line or difficulty moving it from side to side. Some other indicators include a heart-shaped or notched appearance of the tongue's tip and excessive fussiness during feedings.

If parents suspect a tongue tie, we encourage you to reach out to Wellspring in order to assess baby's condition and recommend appropriate treatment options, if necessary!
