As National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month comes to a close, I would like to highlight the critical role Texas health centers play in detecting and preventing colorectal cancer - the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the state.

Early detection saves lives, with nearly 90% of patients surviving five years when cancer is found early. In 2024 alone, Texas health centers provided more than 150,000 screenings through at home stool tests and linking patients to colonoscopy.

With rates of early onset colorectal cancer rising among people under 50, health centers are essential to reversing this trend by maintaining strong access to care, building targeted outreach strategies, and delivering coordinated, patient centered care. - Dr. Steve Ramirez
