I’m going to try to be more faithful to post here this year. Like all New Years Efforts, I have a feeling I will fall short. I get caught up in my work and life just like the rest of you and don’t find myself staying consistent. I like to use this page to send along “food for thought”, resources, encouragement, and the like. So I will try to do better in 2025. But we will see how it turns out. 🙂
To start off the year I want to do a 4 part weekly short series on How The Principles of the Bible Can Improve Your Life (from a counselor’s perspective).
Week 1. Biblical Principles that Support Cognitive Behavior Therapy
In Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) we work to identify thoughts and the actions that stem from those thoughts. We work to challenge those thoughts through looking for evidence to support or refute the thoughts (as well as use of other strategies) and then get to work on balancing the thoughts or developing thinking patterns that are more true. As our thinking improves, our behavior shifts.
The Bible speaks on our thoughts and our active role in controlling thoughts, switching thoughts, using our thoughts to influence and improve our lives.
2 Corinthians 10:5b
“We take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ”.
Romans 12:2
“Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind”.
Philippians 4:6-7
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus”.
Philippians 4:8-9
“Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me—practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.
Colossians 3:2
“Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.”
I hope this week you will be aware of your thoughts and how they are affecting your behavior. Look for ways to challenge those thoughts and behaviors and replace them, so that you can come more into alignment with the person you want to be.
Be Blessed! Looking forward to seeing you in the office this year!
