Remembering Melanie Klein, born on this day in 1882! 🎉

"One hears again and again the expression of the here and now, which although not out of place is often used to lay the whole emphasis on what the patient experiences towards the analyst and leaves out the links with the past. Freud's discovery that feelings towards him were transference from the past, one of the fundamental discoveries of psychoanalysis, retains its value."

- Melanie Klein

As quoted in John Steiner's "Melanie Klein’s Technique Then and Now" in which he explores the content of Klein’s six (then) unpublished lectures on technique, which she originally presented in 1936.

The Significance of Prodromes in Mental Health

In working with my clients, I often assess “prodromes,” a term most have never heard of. A prodrome is the period of time in which an individual presents with subclinical signs or symptoms which precede the onset of a diagnosis such as: schizophrenia, major depressive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, ADHD, or even autism. The prodromal period can last anywhere from many weeks to several years.

Why is this important? Research indicates that early intervention is best. A shorter duration of untreated symptoms associated with mental health conditions is likely to glean a more favorable response to intervention and the likelihood of a better prognosis.

Challenges with mental health can be very disruptive for an individual and their loved ones. If you or someone you know is experiencing symptoms, please reach out. Peace.

5 Things To Help You Create Mental Wellness

Consistent happiness. Is this THE single ingredient for mental wellness? No, it isn’t.

Our brain, our body and our lifestyle balance on the proverbial tightrope while passing through the complexities of life while trying to maintain equilibrium, which is a state of mental calm, or a state of physical balance.

The World Health Organization provides a mental wellness definition: “A state of well-being in which the individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community.” It mentions nothing about happiness or the absence of challenges with mental illness. Mental wellness means you are able to adequately cope with the challenges life throws at you, whether that be as simple as a work project or as complicated as a breakup.

It’s the balance between your emotional, physical, spiritual, and mental self. Be mindful of early warning signs that may turn into a greater issue. Some of these may include: a loss of interest in once pleasurable activities, isolating from friends or family, experiencing changes in mood, poor sleep pattern, having little energy, or thoughts of self-harm.

Here are 5 ideas that can boost mental wellness to get you started:
1. Exercise
2. Eat a clean diet
3. Get restful sleep
4. Remain creative
5. Ask for help and support when you feel you need it

No matter what you are going through, you are not alone.
