Do You Know Your Heart Health Numbers? ❤️

Heart disease remains the leading cause of death, but understanding a few key numbers can help you take control of your risk.

• Eat a balanced, heart-healthy diet 🥗 a snapshot of your heart health:

• Blood pressure
• Blood sugar
• LDL cholesterol
• Triglycerides
• Waist circumference

Together, these numbers help identify your risk for heart attack and stroke.

Here’s what to aim for:

• Blood pressure: under 120/80 🩺
• LDL cholesterol: under 70
• Triglycerides: under 150
• Blood sugar (fasting): under 100
• Waist size: less than half your height or under 35 inches for women and 40 for men

These are general guidelines. Your ideal numbers may vary based on your age and medical history.

The good news is that small lifestyle changes can improve all five:

• Eat a balanced, heart healthy diet 🥗
• Stay active most days 🚶‍♂️
• Get quality sleep 😴
• Manage stress

Knowing your numbers is the first step toward protecting your heart.

Digestive Issues Could Be a Warning Sign for Your Heart ❤️

Bloating, stomach discomfort, or irregular digestion 🤍 might seem like minor issues, but new research suggests they could be connected to something more serious.

A recent study found that people with ongoing digestive symptoms were more likely to show early signs of cardiometabolic risk, including:

• Higher triglycerides 🧪
• Lower “good” HDL cholesterol
• Elevated blood sugar

These are all important markers linked to heart disease ❤️

While more research is needed, the takeaway is clear. Your gut and your heart are more connected than you may think.

If you are experiencing persistent digestive issues, it may be worth looking beyond the stomach and checking your overall health 🩺

Listening to your body early can help prevent bigger problems later.

As a physician, my role is to diagnose, treat, and prescribe.

Prescriptions are straightforward.

I write the order, my staff sends it to the pharmacy, and the patient picks it up and follows the directions.

But prescriptions for sustainable lifestyle changes, improving nutrition, increasing exercise, and reducing stress are far more complex.

They don’t come in a bottle, and they’re not as easy to follow.

That’s exactly what we’re focusing on in this week’s episode of THE VITALS.

Join Debra E. Steere, NBC-HWC, Board-Certified Health & Wellness Coach and valued member of our Primary Prevention MD team, as she shares how to turn good intentions into sustainable, real-life results.

Together, we'll explore how to:

Set goals and discuss the parameters of accountability

Make sustainable life changes that lead to lasting impact

Take ownership of your healthspan under the guidance of a health coach

If you’ve ever wondered why knowing what to do isn’t the same as doing it, and how to implement your doctor's advice in real life, this conversation is for you.

April is Move More Month, a reminder from the American Heart Association that small, consistent movement makes a big difference for your heart health ❤️

You do not need a gym membership or intense workouts. It starts with simple daily choices like walking more, sitting less, and finding easy ways to keep your body moving 🚶‍♀️

Walking just a little more each day can support heart health and overall wellbeing 💪

Key ways to move more every day:
• Take short movement breaks each hour to stand, stretch, or walk ⏰
• Park farther away or take the stairs when possible 🅿️
• Add light “deskercises” like stretches or leg lifts 💺
• Turn phone calls into walking time 📞🚶
• Stay active with family, friends, or pets 🐾
• Use chores like cleaning or gardening as movement opportunities 🧹🌿

Why it matters:
• Even light daily activity supports heart health 🫀
• Regular movement can help reduce risk of heart attack and stroke
• Small changes add up over time and are easier to maintain

The most important step is the first one. Start where you are and build from there 👣

3 Simple Daily Changes Could Lower Your Risk of Heart Attack and Stroke ❤️

What if improving your heart health didn’t require a complete lifestyle overhaul?

New research shows that small, consistent changes can make a meaningful impact. In fact, just a few simple daily adjustments were associated with a 10% lower risk of major cardiovascular events over time.

Here’s where to start:

• Get a little more sleep 💤 Even 10 to 15 extra minutes can help
• Move a little more 🚶‍♂️ Just a few additional minutes of activity each day matters
• Add more vegetables 🥦 Even a small serving makes a difference

These changes may seem minor, but together they can significantly support your heart health. The key is consistency, not perfection.

Your daily habits add up. Small steps today can lead to long term protection for your heart.
