Struggling to get a good night’s sleep? Better rest isn’t just about more hours in bed — it’s about smarter habits.

Here are a few sleep strategies that can make a real difference for your heart and overall health:

• Stick to a consistent sleep schedule — going to bed and waking up at the same time supports better rest
• Prioritize deep and REM sleep, which play a big role in brain and cognitive health
• Limit blue light before bed and try calming routines like a “worry journal” to clear your mind
• Try mental techniques like cognitive shuffling to help your brain relax into sleep

Quality sleep supports blood pressure, heart health, focus, and energy — and small changes can go a long way.

If sleep issues are affecting your health, our team is here to help.

Daylight Saving Time: Don’t Forget About Your Heart

When we “spring forward,” we lose an hour of sleep — and that small change can have a real impact on your health.

Studies show that disrupted sleep and changes in routine can temporarily increase stress on the body, including a higher risk of heart events in the days following the time change.

A few simple tips to help your body adjust:

• Go to bed 15–20 minutes earlier a few nights before the change
• Maintain a consistent sleep schedule
• Stay hydrated and limit late caffeine
• Get morning sunlight to reset your internal clock

Your heart thrives on routine, quality sleep, and healthy habits. Use this time change as a reminder to check in on your overall cardiovascular health.

Not All Rest Is the Same! 😴

Did you know that getting enough sleep might not be enough to truly recharge? According to experts at Harvard, there are 7 types of rest your body and mind need to feel fully energized:

1️⃣ Physical Rest – Sleep, naps, or gentle movement like stretching
2️⃣ Mental Rest – Quiet your mind with journaling or meditation
3️⃣ Spiritual Rest – Connect to something bigger through nature, community, or reflection
4️⃣ Sensory Rest – Take breaks from screens and overstimulation
5️⃣ Creative Rest – Admire art, try something new, or explore ideas
6️⃣ Emotional Rest – Share feelings, journal, or take space from stress
7️⃣ Social Rest – Balance social time with moments that recharge you

💡 Feeling drained? You might need one of these other types of rest — not just more sleep!

Here's a frequently asked question:
When should you see a cardiologist❓

There isn’t one “right” number.
However, certain factors make an evaluation especially important:

💗A strong family history of heart disease, particularly at a young age

💗High blood pressure, cholesterol, or other risk factors

💗And for most adults, at least one cardiac evaluation after age 40

A preventive visit helps assess your individual risk and creates a plan to protect your heart health long before problems develop.

Prevention starts with awareness.
And one conversation can make all the difference.

Let's talk!

How to Tell If You’re Dehydrated — No Doctor Visit Needed

Your body is made up of about 70% water, and every organ — including your heart — depends on proper hydration to function well. Even mild dehydration can leave you feeling off before you realize what’s happening.

Common signs you may need more water:
• Dry mouth or dry tongue
• Dark yellow urine
• Headaches or dizziness
• Feeling faint or unusually tired

You can even try a simple skin turgor test: gently pinch the skin on your chest or forehead. If it doesn’t quickly bounce back, dehydration may be the cause.

How to rehydrate the right way:
• Sip water slowly instead of chugging
• Eat water-rich foods like watermelon and cucumber
• Include potassium- and magnesium-rich foods to help your body absorb fluids

A simple guideline: aim to drink about half your body weight in ounces of water daily (for example, 160 lbs = ~80 oz).

If symptoms persist or you frequently feel dehydrated, it’s always best to check in with your physician.

Can Beef Fit Into a Heart-Healthy Diet?

Dr. Leonard Pianko was recently quoted in a new article discussing emerging research on red meat and heart health.

A recent study suggests that moderate portions of lean beef, when eaten as part of a Mediterranean-style diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, and healthy fats, may not worsen certain cardiovascular risk markers in healthy adults.

However, Dr. Pianko emphasizes that balance still matters. Higher intake of red meat — especially processed meats like bacon, sausage, and deli meats — continues to be linked to increased cardiovascular risk, highlighting the importance of overall diet quality and moderation.

Heart health isn’t about eliminating foods entirely — it’s about making thoughtful choices within a balanced lifestyle.

Food & Medication: What You Eat Matters for Blood Pressure

Did you know certain foods can affect how your blood pressure medications work?

Dr. Leonard Pianko was recently quoted in Health discussing common food interactions patients should be aware of while taking blood pressure medication.

Some foods to watch for include:
• Grapefruit and certain fruit juices
• Aged cheeses (for patients on specific medications)
• High-sodium processed foods
• High-potassium foods (depending on your prescription)
• Licorice and licorice-containing products

As Dr. Pianko explains, “Eating foods with a high salt content can reduce the effectiveness of medications intended to lower blood pressure.” Small dietary choices can make a big difference in how well your treatment works.

If you take blood pressure medication, talk with your physician about how your diet may impact your care.
