Julio, an active weightlifter, suddenly started feeling discomfort in his groin area while training. Medical checkups and a CT scan later confirmed that his strenuous weightlifting activities had pushed tissue from inside his abdomen through a weak spot in his groin, leading to an inguinal hernia.
Dr. Evander Meneses (https://bit.ly/44MuehF), a general surgeon with HCA Florida Aventura Hospital, operated on Julio, repairing the inguinal hernia and placing a mesh to strengthen the weakened groin area. “I am very grateful to Dr. Meneses, his staff and everyone who was with me during this surgery. While robotic-assisted laparoscopic surgery was not possible in my case due to multiple previous abdominal surgeries I had in the past, the wound healed beautifully, and I appreciate that a lot.”
Post-surgery, Julio maintained almost absolute rest, including not going to the gym for two months and lifting no more than 10 pounds. “Following Dr. Meneses’ advice during my recovery was worth it because when I started to resume my activities, I saw the difference in my body. Little by little, I was able to resume normal activities gradually. When I got back to the gym, I took it easy, more or less lifting 10 pounds at first. And a month after being back in the gym, I started feeling so much stronger and could slowly start lifting heavier weights again.”
“A majority of inguinal hernias are caused by anything that increases the pressure inside of your abdomen. This includes excessive coughing, straining when urinating, straining when having a bowel movement, obesity or strenuous exercises. However, I advise weightlifters to practice caution while lifting weights in the gym. It is important when lifting weights that you practice proper form under expert supervision. If you develop pain or a bump in the groin area after lifting heavy weights, this may be a hernia, and you should seek medical consultation”, shares Dr. Meneses.
