🌺 Women’s History Month Spotlight: Honoring Women in Healthcare
In celebration of Women’s History Month, Royal Care proudly recognizes trailblazing women in healthcare whose leadership, brilliance, and resilience have transformed the field.
Today, we honor Joycelyn Elders, MD (1933– ), a pioneering physician and history‑maker who became the first African American Surgeon General of the United States and only the second woman to hold the role.
Dr. Elders’ journey began in rural Arkansas, where she grew up in a large sharecropping family and often missed school to work in the fields. She did not meet a doctor until age 16—an experience that inspired her lifelong commitment to medicine and public health.
After serving in the Army, she attended the University of Arkansas Medical School through the GI Bill, graduating in 1960 as the only woman in her class. She went on to become Arkansas’s first board‑certified pediatric endocrinologist, dedicating her work to improving outcomes for children and addressing teen pregnancy, especially among youth with diabetes.
Her leadership, courage, and advocacy continue to open doors for women and communities of color in healthcare.
