Lack of sleep and food desire go hand-in-hand. In fact, lack of sleep alters our appetite-regulating hormones, which can increase our consumption of calorie-dense foods and contribute to weight gain.
More specifically, lack of sleep causes the hunger-stimulating hormone ghrelin to increase, which causes you to eat more. It also decreases levels of the appetite-suppressing hormone leptin. Cortisol, the stress hormone, may increase, stimulating your appetite.
Together, all of this serves to increase your desire for sugar. This happens because sugar causes a release of dopamine in your brain, and that is a feel-good chemical. Eating that sugary treat gives you a temporary feeling of pleasure and allows you to avoid that feeling of exhaustion. However, it is only a temporary fix. Instead, seek to get a good night of sleep, and keep those cravings at bay!😴
