I don’t know if I find it…interesting? Ironic maybe?…but “back in my day” we used to punish kids who engaged in self-stimulatory (stimming) behavior at the clinic I worked at. Now, 15 years later, and as a BCBA and clinic owner, I made a SENSORY ROOM for our kiddos to take their stimming pleasure up a notch! Because their stimming makes them happy and (selfishly) brings me joy.

So I guess the emotions I’m really feeling is sad that those days happened but grateful that the field of ABA is making strides to better itself and the treatment we provide our kiddos.

We had our Breakfast with Santa at the clinic this morning! Best day of the year! Thank you to all our families who came out, to all the staff for helping set it up and tear it down, and a special thanks to Bri for taking pictures and Santa Mike for being great with our kiddos! 🎅🏻🎄

So true and something we need to remember! One of my biggest pet peeves is when an adult takes a child’s behavior personally. Most of the time (and I mean 98% of the situations I have seen in my 15+ years of experience), maladaptive behaviors are the result of a skill deficit, such as not being able to communicate needs/wants or tolerate aversive situations. When we make it personal and start using language like, “He attacked me” or “I was assaulted,” we lose focus on why it happened in the first place and the consequence never teaches a child anything constructive to use in the future.

Smaller ABA = greater outcomes for you and your child. One of the best decisions I ever made was breaking away from “Big Box” ABA and creating my own brand!
