Dysautonomia is a common finding with concussion. Are you being assessed for this condition? Multi-positional bilateral blood pressure, pupillometry and Heart Rate Variability are just a few of the diagnostics that should be included in your evaluation. Speed of saccades is also a significant correlating finding that should be considered.

Predictive visual tracking, assessed using eye tracking technology, is able to differentiate deficits in oculomotor functions in individuals with and without concussion. The eye tracking technology may serve as a quick objective tool to detect and monitor neural deficits due to TBI.

Pupillary light reflex can be specifically measured and used as a biomarker for concussion.

The technology mentioned in this research is used in our office to assess this function.

If you know of anyone suffering from the effects of a concussion ask if they are being treated by a Carrick trained clinician.

“Over 50% of individuals with mTBI are reported to have VOR abnormalities, which strongly contribute to feelings of dizziness and unsteadiness.”

VOR or vestibulo-ocular reflex can be assessed in a typical bedside neurological exam, or more specifically with technology that can very specifically measure the relationship of the eyes and related head movements.

This reflex needs to be brought back to normal for appropriate recovery from mTBI.

Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) is a prevalent injury which occurs across many populations, including children and adolescents, athletes, military personnel, and the elderly. mTBI can result in various subjective symptoms and clinical deficits, such as abnormalities to the vestibulo-ocular reflex...

Concussion injuries much of the time can cause dysautonomia, which among other functions can alter blood flow. As you can see from this dissection, blood flow to the head and brain is extensive. If dysfunction to the autonomic nervous system (ANS) is present, it can contribute to incomplete recovery from head injuries.

The evaluation of the ANS needs to be included in any concussion examination. You need to find a health professional who understands this and is able to provide this type of examination and treatment if necessary.

Pupillary responses can give information about past trauma. Even if stress is considered positive, it can activate a threat response. The autonomic nervous system (ANS) needs to be thoroughly assessed with any brain related injury, and the eyes are a window. Here with the eye’s pupil responses.

Pupillometry, Heart Rate Variability, and Tilt Table Testing are some of the tools used to evaluate ANS in concussion cases.

A patient’s pupils can reveal if they have suffered a traumatic experience in the past, suggested a new study.

We can help you find a practitioner that utilizes computerized oculomotor and balance assessments to objectively measure and track progress.

Please forward this information to those you know who have children (whether they've had a concussion or not). It is important that they get evaluated for these functions.

Baseline assessments prior to sustaining a concussion is certainly an option as well.

To comprehensively characterize the clinical presentation and course of care for concussion among 5- to 11-year-old children, identifying preinjury and injury factors potentially influencing clinical outcomes.

If you are not being assessed for HRV (Heart Rate Variability) with concussion you are NOT being completely evaluated. Depression and anxiety are common sequelae to TBI and their causes not addressed with meds.

Depression is one of the frequent complications following a mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). Recent research indicated that abnormalities in the autonomic nervous system (ANS) can be evaluated by ...
