Everyone had to travel to the city or village of their ancestors to register. Because Joseph was descended from David, he had to go to Bethlehem in Judea, where David formerly had lived. Together with Mary, his pregnant wife, he left Nazareth in Galilee to register.
When they arrived in , Mary gave birth to a boy. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because Mary and Joseph could not find shelter in the tavern of the village.
