McKenzie Mahan, Amya Wilson, and Tennie McInnes are spending their summer interning at a local dental office, where they’ve been supporting the team with sterilization, room turnover, and assisting both hygienists and dentists throughout the day.

Their work includes preparing tools, cleaning up between patients, and learning how a fast-paced dental environment operates. Each of them has gotten hands-on experience in a clinical setting—and even had the chance to assist directly during procedures.

All three interns are interested in pursuing careers in healthcare, especially in the dental field. McKenzie is focused on becoming a dental assistant, Amya is exploring patient care and hopes to join the OTA program, and Tennie is thinking about college and building on what she’s learning now.

Along the way, they’ve gained a new respect for how much detail goes into dental care—and how much happens behind the scenes to keep everything running smoothly. They've also found that working in a supportive, encouraging environment makes the learning experience even better.

The internship program lasts eight weeks and offers paid placements. Stay tuned for more intern stories each week—and watch for openings next year!

Meet Ciara! She chose dental hygiene due to the rewarding nature of the career. She enjoys educating her patients about their oral health and seeing their progress in achieving a healthier, happier smile.

After graduation, she plans to work locally as a dental hygienist in Durango, CO, and Aztec, NM

Ciara loves to spend time with her family. They enjoy golfing, hiking, mountain biking, and snowboarding.

Since summer 2022, Maddie has been a valued member of the Aztec Dental team, demonstrating a keen ability to learn the dental field and obtaining certification as a dental assistant in 2023. Her close collaboration with Dr. Durfey and Sarah has equipped her with extensive knowledge of the position. We extend our warmest congratulations to Maddie on her achievement.
