Happy Imbolc! Today is half way between the official start of winter and the start of spring.

Some of us call it Groundhog Day, some Imbolc, some St Bridget's Day.

No matter what you call today, even if you have never thought about the symbology, many traditions take today as a day to decide if there will be 6 more weeks of winter, or alternatively, an early spring.

No matter what the groundhog, or Cailleach, decides about how many more weeks of winter there will be, what is most important is to notice how we are feeling about our own inner "wintering." It has been a big year for me personally, and I yearn for more time by the fire, more books to get lost in, and more opportunity to just sit with what appeared in my life this past year.

While personally my body would LOVE more sun and spring like weather, the inner me is not ready to "get up and go." I know that I need more time to simmer in he still semi-dark days of winter.

What about you? It is ok if you want both more sun, and less rushing. Both can be true.

Today is also a day to set some intentions about what else you want to do with your "wintering" time. Are there more books to read, seed catalogs to look over, more time to snuggle up next to your kiddo or animals? We will only ever be at this moment once in our lives. Next year will be different. Savor it (even if you will also savor more sun in the coming weeks)!

How do you know when you need a healer?

For years, I have tried to have a gratitude practice at the dinner table, but my 6 yo has never really picked it up. Sometimes he mimics me and shares 1 or 2 things he is grateful for, but I always have to push him to do it. The other day, while having dinner with my best friend along with my kiddo, I shared my gratitudes for the day. My best friend did the same, but the kiddo never followed suit.

The conversation shifted for a moment and the my friend said: “I think we should share something we appreciate about each other.” Notice how she didn’t use the word “gratitude.” With this, the flood gates opened. My kiddo loved the idea of sharing what he appreciated about us each (and himself since that was also part of the task). We got to hear authentic things from his sweet little mouth that felt so heartwarming to us adults.

What does this have to do with the need for healers? I’m almost there.

I realized that while I have talked with my kiddo about Gratitude over and over, somehow the word didn’t stick. It just didn’t feel natural, more maybe he didn’t really understand the word, it is hard to know. And it doesn’t really matter.

But what was clear is when we changed the context only slightly, he dived right in.

What does this have to do with needing a healer?

Sometimes we keep trying the same practice over and over and it never sticks. This is when we need an outside perspective. It could be a friend, an advisor, or a well trained healer. The important thing is that if you are suffering and tired of hitting your head against the wall, please ask for help. There are those of us with years of experience to help suggest a different way.

You are worth it!

The thing about healing is it never looks how you might expect. I want to thank you all for the kindness during this time of my Dad’s passing. It was unexpected and happened the night before his birthday celebration. Life often happens this way, news that will rock our world arrives without warning. Whether it is a cancer diagnosis, a sudden end to a relationship, an unexpected crisis in your child’s life, or even sudden reliving a past trauma, these moments in time shift our current reality. And maybe that is a good thing.

How do we find resilience in these moments? Well, the answer is simple, in those moments we might not. Our life is suddenly, and unexpectedly, different from the moment before.

But in the hours, days, and weeks after, the sudden shift creates an opportunity for an entirely new understanding of ourselves. From the depths of our pain, a new place forms. At first this place is full of sadness, raw insecurity, and intense vulnerability. BUT, this is where the metaphorical phoenix rises from the ashes. We need this internal forest fire to clean the deck so new seeds may germinate.

Almost immediately after hearing the news of my dad’s sudden passing, I realized that maybe it was ok that my dad had wounding. Maybe it was ok that our relationship was not as perfect as I might have wished it to be. I know with all my heart he loved me fully and vice versa. Suddenly, that was all that mattered.

In the days after he died, I saw that my Dad’s shyness, his tentativeness to connect to me and others, also resided within me. It too was holding me back from reaching out to those that I love, and from relying on others. It highlighted that if I wanted different relationships in my life, then it was up to me to overcome the shyness that my dad passed on, to ignore my fear of not being important enough. I want more out of life and my relationships. My dad’s passing is giving me an opportunity to choose differently.

These moments in our lives are opportunity, this is what Inner Resilience looks like. It is not about being “strong enough,” it is about sifting through our pain to find the seeds in the ashes from the fire. It is about asking for help when we need it. It is about finding the tools we did not know we have, in the darkest parts of our lives.

I mean, it might seem easy for me to say all of this. I do not know your life, who you are, or your trauma. But what I witness over and over again is when giving space and opportunity, my clients find a way through. They find THEIR way through, they find the seeds left in the ashes of their lives and trauma.

Especially when someone is holding space, it gives us each opportunity to heal. We find the seeds and give them some water, air and light. This is the path towards growth. Are you ready?

I have been thinking a lot about suffering lately. I see it everywhere. We are a nation who constantly carries burdens everywhere we go. How can we find relief from the burden without letting go of the things we care about?

Contact is key!! Relief from suffering happens when we turn to face our fears, with the proper support and assistance from others. When we are constant running from our fears, the suffering continues.

The smallest support can help. Is it time to reach out to a friend? Time to dance it out? Perhaps journalling would feel supportive. Make a list of even the smallest of activities that offer some relief. Together they are the road towards more connected you.

Are you ready for more support in your life? Contact me to schedule an appointment and together we will find a way for you to turn towards your fears to face that which is causing the suffering.

What is Inner Resilience? It can be many things at different times! Sometimes it's taking a breath when you are faced with difficulty. Sometimes it's knowing when you need some self care. It can be as easy as finding laughter in your day or asking for help when you are over your head. No matter what, we are brought into this world with our own strengths and skills, our own resilience to what life brings. In this day and age especially, its easy to forget who we are and to feel our own strength. Looking to reconnect to yours? I can help.--Lanie, owner of Inner Resilience Healing and Bodywork
