For those whose training didn’t prepare them to know HOW to cite sources ethically and avoid plagiarism, consider this concise summary.

IntroductionWhen writing research or academic papers, it is common to use outside sources to inform your own ideas. However, it is critical that the necessary citations are provided to these outside references. Citation is important because it shows that you obtained information or ideas from anothe...

Why Commissioner Makary's FDA expert panel could change everything - July 21st Livestream

07/16/2025

The Early Trauma Protocol was originated by Katie O’Shea, expanded in collaboration between O’Shea and Paulsen, published by Paulsen. Anyone purporting to teach it isn’t doing so with my permission. My agreement with Katie that no one else would teach it but us because I spent hundreds and hundreds of hours - maybe thousands - developing PowerPoints, handouts, forms, the book, many chapters for another book. Lots of years with no vacation and few weekends. And people just take it and teach it or tweak a little something and call it theirs.

The NEST approach was developed by me to systematically integrate EMDR, somatic and ego state therapies and affect regulation strategies and the early trauma approach for complex cases. Anyone teaching using the NEST acronym and metaphor is not doing so with my permission. This is my intellectual property. N is for Neuroaffective, E is for Embodiment through somatic work, S is for self system enlistment through ego state therapy, and T is for the eight phases of EMDR and Temporal Integration (Early Trauma approach).

I can’t believe our field is such that I have to keep after people to cease and desist all the time. Some are stealing overtly, and some have source amnesia (don’t know where they got it) and some don’t know how to cite sources ethically and in a scholarly fashion. Source amnesia is understandable, the other two aren’t even a little okay.

On to teach in Izmir, Turkey! Then a week in Greece.

Less than 2 weeks until I am in Turkiye presenting! I look forward to sharing notes on the trip.

Less than 2 weeks until I am in Turkiye presenting! I look forward to sharing notes on the trip.

From July 27-28 I will be presenting a workshop, "Looking through the Eyes: EMDR and Ego-State Therapy Across the Dissociative Continuum" in Turkiye.

Program Details:
Dissociative clients present unique challenges for EMDR practitioners, who may learn the hard way that the standard protocol is not safe for complex cases, including previously undiagnosed DID. Ego state methods can resolve internal conflicts, increase affect and soma tolerance, enable stabilization and containment, and offer essential interweaves for stuck complex EMDR processing.

This workshop reviews specific ego state techniques and how they may be used in EMDR phases including history, preparation, target selection, desensitization and more. Participants will learn to conduct fractionated EMDR processing for DID clients. Loyalty to the aggressor can stop the “EMDR train” from going down the tracks, so the workshop will address how to work with perpetrator introjects, which are typically the locus of this blockage. The workshop also addresses conference room (Frasier’s dissociative table) technique, and 2) headaches that emerge before, during or after a session. Attendees will learn to: orient and appreciate parts, mediate internal conflicts, hear the story as it emerges in the enactments in the relationship field, and more. Finally, this workshop includes case material addressing OCD in DID clients with child ego states as the locus of the trauma.
