This weekend we mourn the loss of Senior Professor Doug Washburn (far right). He died yesterday, Sunday morning, May 27th, 2024 in a hospice room at Christian Hospital in north Saint Louis. Small cell lung cancer had spread throughout his body. His time in the hospital was filled with visit from family and friends, and grateful students.
Professor Washburn was among the few to earn a black belt from Gm Alan Carter, and he was responsible for producing dozens of quality students and black belts thereafter. As we reminisced in his last days, he told me that teaching had been one of the greatest joys of his life.
I believe that because I cannot remember ever spending much time with him that he wasn't teaching something to somebody. He taught classes at various locations for many years, and inspired some of his students to teach as well. There are few Kajukenbo practitioners in the Saint Louis area that can't trace their roots back to him.
I am sad to say goodbye to my teacher and friend, whose life and impact I am unable to summarize in a short post. But if you've met him, you know. He was a generous teacher, and he held nothing back from those students who sought him over the years. May it be the same for him in heaven.
