Millions of Americans suffer from pelvic floor dysfunction and don't even know it. Women, especially those who have vaginally birthed a child, are 60% more likely to experience PFD in their lifetimes.
So WHAT IS IT?
According to the Cleveland Clinic, 'Pelvic floor dysfunction is the inability to correctly relax and coordinate your pelvic floor muscles' to control many ordinary functions like being able to control the flow of urine, defecation (having a normal bowel movement), and having pleasurable s*x.
Symptoms include deep hip or pelvic pain, constipation, straining to defecate, having urine or stool leakage, and experiencing a frequent need to p*e. For women, symptoms such as prolapse, painful s*x, urine leakage when you cough or sneeze, painful PMS, and a reduced ability to or**sm are quite common.
Luckily, PFD can be fairly easy to diagnose and treat without medications or surgery, in most cases. Manual therapy and massage in combination with specific exercises have been shown to make a significant difference for people. Please see your doctor if you think you may have pelvic floor dysfunction or if you are in acute pain.
