Baker Valley Physical Therapy would like to recognize Betty Shields-Buttram for her amazing determination during her rehabilitation process. She has been selected by the staff at Baker Valley Physical Therapy to receive our Spirit of Determination Award. Betty’s rehab journey has been filled with hard earned accomplishments and perseverance. Betty explains her situation:

“The journey I call life, changed dramatically for me in February 2023. I entered the hospital for a L3-4 decompression surgery and woke up 7 days later. The abdominal aorta artery ruptured during surgery requiring an emergency situation. I am blessed that this happened in the operating room with qualified surgeons and staff to care for me. My rehab journey began with learning to move, speak, and swallow due to the complications. I was transferred to the rehab hospital in March and the work began. I started here at Baker Valley Physical Therapy in July 2023 and have been here 2 times a week ever since. I started with only the ability to stand from the wheelchair to the parallel bars. Due to the gentle but consistent oversight (and sometimes not so gentle) I am now able to walk with a walker for quite some distance. My two therapists, Blake and Sebastian, along with the continual care of my spouse, Erny, have pushed, pulled, threatened, and even bribed me to do more and more. I am blessed with a Lord that loves me, caring friends and family, and therapists that support and challenge me to always just “take one more step.”

Thank you Blake and Sebastian, you are amazing! - Betty
