World Health Day: Health is a Human Right 🌍

Today, PACE by IIH stands alongside communities around the world in affirming that health is a fundamental human right.

Good health is about more than managing symptoms. It means living with independence, staying connected to the activities and people that matter most, and receiving care that sees you as a whole person.

That is what PACE is all about. Through coordinated, compassionate support from our interdisciplinary team, participants receive care that honors their individual needs and helps them live happier and healthier lives at home.

This World Health Day, and every day, we renew our commitment to whole-person care for all. πŸ’š πŸ’™

April is Occupational Therapy Month, and we're proud to celebrate our dedicated Occupational Therapy team who make a difference in the quality of life of our participants every day! 🌟

Occupational therapists, or OTs, help seniors maintain the skills, routines, and independence that make daily life meaningful. From staying safe at home to engaging in the activities they love, their work is at the heart of what person-centered care truly looks like.

Occupational therapy is a cornerstone of the PACE all-inclusive model of care. OTs are members of the interdisciplinary team (IDT) and work to ensure each participant receives the support that reflects their individual goals, culture, and vision of living well at home.

To occupational therapists everywhere, thank you for the compassion, skill, and dedication you bring to your work. The independence and dignity you help preserve is immeasurable.

Happy Occupational Therapy Month! πŸ’š

πŸ’œ Honoring Women Who Transformed Elder Care πŸ’œ

In 1936, Dr. Marjory Warren reviewed hundreds of older patients in London and showed many could improve with proper treatment and rehabilitation. Her research and advocacy led to geriatrics becoming a recognized medical specialty in the 1950s, transforming care for older adults.

Her pioneering work laid the foundation for modern approaches to caring for older adults around the world.

πŸŒΆοΈπŸ” "Discover the Power of Nutrition" this National Nutrition Month!

Did you know red bell peppers contain more vitamin C than oranges? Just one cup delivers over 150% of your daily vitamin C needs.

Vitamin C plays an important role in supporting immune health, helping the body heal, and protecting cells from damage. Small nutrition choices like adding colorful vegetables can make a big difference in overall wellbeing.

At PACE by IIH, our nutritionists work with participants to build balanced, nourishing meal plans that support healthy aging and individual dietary needs.

During National Nutrition Month, we’re celebrating the power of everyday foods to help people live healthier lives.

This National Social Work Month, we are proud to recognize and celebrate the dedicated social workers who make a meaningful difference every day.

Social workers understand that health isn't just medical. It's also about supports that ensure healthier outcomes, like home, food, safety, family, and minimizing stress. They look at the whole person and help bridge the gap between medical care and real life. In the PACE model of care, their perspective and input are essential. Care must be based on each person's full story, not just their diagnoses.

They help the team see what life is really like at home. Their ability to approach each situation with compassion, professionalism, and cultural sensitivity strengthens the all-inclusive, participant-centered model that defines PACE by IIH.

πŸ’™ In 2025, social workers at PACE by IIH achieved a 96% participant satisfaction rate.

πŸ’œ Honoring Women Who Challenged Ageism πŸ’œ

In 1970, after being forced to retire at age 65, activist Maggie Kuhn founded the Gray Panthers to fight age discrimination and advocate for older adults’ rights. Their activism helped push reforms that raised the mandatory retirement age in 1978 and eliminated it in 1986.

Throughout her life, Kuhn spoke out against age discrimination and encouraged older adults to stay active, engaged, and visible in their communities.

Her work helped reshape how society thinks about aging and the value older adults bring to public life.

πŸ₯” Nutrition That Powers Healthy Aging

Many people think of bananas as the go-to source of potassium, but a plain potato actually contains more. One potato has about 900 mg of potassium, compared to roughly 420 mg in a banana.

Potassium helps support heart health, muscle function, and healthy blood pressure, making it an important nutrient as we age.

At PACE by IIH, our nutritionists help participants discover foods that support their health while keeping meals familiar, comforting, and nutritious.

This National Nutrition Month, we’re celebrating how thoughtful nutrition guidance helps our participants stay healthy, strong, and supported.

πŸ’œ Honoring Women Who Shaped Elder Care πŸ’œ

Social worker Marie-Louise Ansak saw a problem in the late 1960s. Many older adults wanted to remain in their homes, but traditional healthcare systems were not built to support them there.

In 1971, she helped co-found On Lok in San Francisco, creating one of the nation’s first senior day health centers. The model combined medical care, social services, and community support while allowing older adults to continue living at home.

Over time, this innovative approach grew into what is now known as the Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE), a model that continues to help older adults age with dignity in their communities.

Today, PACE organizations across the country carry forward the vision she helped bring to life.

Nowruz, the Persian New Year, marks the vernal equinox and the start of spring. Starting today, celebrations are marked by renewal, gathering around the Haft-sin table, and cultural traditions observed worldwide.

The Haft-Sin table, found in many Persian households, is a ceremonial spread featuring seven specific items that symbolize life, growth, and wisdom.

This week, our OC PACE Day Center staff set up a Haft-Sin table and walked participants through the meaning of each item, helping everyone learn more about this meaningful global holiday.

πŸ’™Nourish Your Heart with Seasonal Goodness: Heart-Healthy Fruits and Vegetables πŸ’™

Eating heart-healthy foods is a simple and delicious way to support cardiovascular health, maintain energy, and feel your best. Seasonal fruits and vegetables are rich in nutrients, fiber, and antioxidants that help protect the heart.
PACE by IIH participants work with a Registered Dietitian to create personalized meal plans that support good heart health and overall well-being based on individual needs and preferences.

Here are some of our dietary professionals' favorite heart-healthy foods:
🍊 Citrus fruits (oranges, grapefruit, tangerines) - high in vitamin C and fiber to support heart health.
πŸ₯¬ Leafy greens (spinach, kale, Swiss chard) - packed with nutrients that help manage blood pressure.
πŸ₯• Carrots & sweet potatoes - rich in beta-carotene and fiber for overall wellness.
🍎 Apples & pears - a great source of soluble fiber that can help lower cholesterol.
πŸ₯¦ Broccoli & Brussels sprouts - full of antioxidants and heart-protective nutrients.
πŸ“ Strawberries (early spring) - contain antioxidants that support healthy blood vessels.
Some helpful tips:
βœ”οΈ Choose frozen vegetables and fruits, which are just as nutritious and often more affordable
βœ”οΈ Buy seasonal produce when it's at its peak and lowest price
βœ”οΈ Look for low-sodium canned options for convenience and longer shelf life
βœ”οΈ Add fruits and veggies to every meal and snack
βœ”οΈ Try simple preparations like steaming, roasting, or enjoying them fresh

Small, nourishing choices each day can support a stronger heart and a healthier lifestyle. Celebrate American Heart Month by adding colorful, seasonal produce to your plate! πŸ’™
