A man that died two years ago on national television is now a starting safety in the NFL.
Hats off to all my paramedic friends and paramedics everywhere.
And I think a question I might be: is he at risk of this happening again? Yes, but he’s at no higher risk than everybody else on the football field. What happened to him requires that fraction of a second co-occurrence of being struck really hard in the chest while your heart is in a specific part of it’s cycle. A part which only lasts a fraction of a second. it happens every year, but it’s also rare for this reason.
Fraction of a second.
2000 American athletes die each year from heart related causes. Most of them are from congenital defects, remember Pete Maravich? But a few of them are from this.
The rapid availability of an automated defibrillator and skilled paramedics, who knew what to do… That’s why this man is still alive.
again, hats off to all my paramedic friends and paramedics everywhere. These ladies and gentlemen have the hardest job in medicine. and they see more heartbreak than I’ll ever have to see as an emergency room physician.
