Cyrus Moon MD FACS general bariatric surgery

Cyrus Moon MD FACS general bariatric surgery I evaluate and treat patients with general surgical problems, and offer surgical options for patient Dr. Moon was born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio.

He moved to Houston, Texas for high school. He then went on to receive his Bachelors of Science degree in biomedical engineering and computer science at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. Towards the end of undergraduate school Dr. Moon made the decision to pursue a career in medicine, which would allow for a career involving science as well as direct interaction and service to others. He went on to pursue his medical degree at the University of Texas Southwestern in Dallas, Texas. Dr. Moon completed his surgical residency at the University of California San Francisco, Fresno program. During residency he has found particular interest in the techniques of minimally invasive surgery as well as the benefits that it offered for surgical patients, in terms of faster recovery and decreased pain, discomfort and morbidity. Dr. Moon therefore went on to complete a fellowship in Minimally Invasive Surgery at UCSF Fresno, with mentors that are world renowned in the field of bariatric surgery. He has been practicing surgery in the Central Valley ever since completion of his training in 2013; first in Delano where he is still Bariatric Surgical Director, and now in Bakersfield since the fall of 2016. He is currently one of the only fellowship-trained bariatric surgeons practicing in Kern County.

Weight Loss Surgery: What to Expect ๐Ÿค”

Are you considering weight loss surgery? ๐Ÿฅ I've had many patients ask me about what to expect on the day of their procedure. Here's a step-by-step guide to help prepare you! ๐Ÿ˜Š

The Day Before Surgery: โฐ

Our office will provide you with the date, time, and location of your surgery ๐Ÿ“….
Plan to arrive at the hospital 1-2 hours before your scheduled surgery time ๐Ÿš—.

The Morning Of Surgery: โ˜€๏ธ

You'll go through admissions and be registered by our team ๐Ÿ‘‹.
*You'll meet a nurse who will help you change into your gown and get an IV inserted in your arm (this is standard procedure for all surgeries) ๐Ÿ’‰.
I'll meet with you and our anesthesia provider to discuss any medical issues or concerns you may have ๐Ÿค.

The Surgery Process: ๐Ÿ”ฌ

Once the room is ready, we'll roll you back to the operating room on a gurney ๐Ÿšช.
You'll be transferred to a bed and have an oxygen mask on your face (don't worry, this is normal!) ๐Ÿ‘.
Our anesthesia provider will guide you through the counting process before you go under ๐Ÿ’ค.

Waking Up and Recovery: ๐ŸŒž

When you wake up, you may feel sore - like you've done 100 push-ups or sit-ups! ๐Ÿ˜“
You'll be able to walk around by the end of the day ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ.
We'll help you figure out how slow to drink liquids initially (take small sips at a time!) ๐Ÿ’ง.
You'll receive oxygen therapy through a breathing machine to ensure your lungs are healthy ๐Ÿ’จ.
Going Home: ๐Ÿ

Most people are discharged from the hospital within 1-2 days ๐Ÿšช.
Once home, you should be able to walk around on your own and manage pain with medication ๐Ÿค’.
Make sure to hydrate yourself slowly, taking small sips of liquids at first! ๐Ÿ’ฆ

Remember, our anesthesia providers are experts in their field and the risk of waking up during surgery is extremely low ๐Ÿ”ฅ. If you have any questions or concerns, don't hesitate to reach out! ๐Ÿ˜Š

Thinking About Bariatric Surgery Out of Town? ๐Ÿค”

Considering traveling out of town for weight loss surgery? It might seem like a simpler and cheaper option, but there are important factors to keep in mind.

๐ŸŒŸ Key Points to Consider:

Follow-Up Care: Bariatric surgery isnโ€™t a one-time only event; it requires close and ongoing follow-up care. Even with a perfectly performed surgery, issues can arise associated with the physiological changes of the surgery, especially in the first year. Maintaining a close relationship with your surgeon is crucial for managing these challenges.

Post-Surgery Support: Even if you have had surgery out of state or out of the country, weโ€™re still here to help with follow-up care if needed. We donโ€™t want anyone to unnecessarily suffer or feel abandoned due to problems associated with bariatric surgery. Our goal is to support you throughout your weight loss journey and ensure the best outcomes for your health.

Feel free to reach out with any questions or concernsโ€”weโ€™re here to support you!

Can I Regain the Weight Lost from Bariatric Surgery? ๐Ÿค”

Itโ€™s not uncommon for people to wonder about regaining weight after bariatric surgery. Hereโ€™s what you need to know:

๐Ÿ” Weight Regain:

Weight regain can occur for various reasons. Sometimes, the surgery may not work as effectively for everyone due to genetic or hereditary factors. More commonly however, itโ€™s related to lifestyle choices, diet, and exercise.

๐Ÿ”ง Surgery as a Tool:

Bariatric surgery is not a magic bullet. Itโ€™s a tool to help you reach a healthier weight, but maintaining that weight requires a committed lifestyle. This means committing to a high-protein, low-carbohydrate diet, staying hydrated, and exercising regularly.

๐Ÿฝ๏ธ Lifestyle Matters:

If you continue poor eating habits after surgery, you may lose weight initially but could start regaining it after a year or two. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is key to long-term success.

๐Ÿฉบ Ongoing Care:

It's important to follow up with your bariatric surgeon regularly. They are your lifelong partner in health, ready to help with any issues related to your gastrointestinal system, such as digestive problems or unexpected weight changes.

Feel free to reach out if you have any questions or concerns about your journey!

What Is It Like Recovering from Bariatric Surgery? ๐Ÿค”

Many people wonder about recovery after bariatric surgery, including how long theyโ€™ll be off work and what to expect. Hereโ€™s what you need to know:

๐Ÿฅ Hospital Stay:

Duration: Most people stay in the hospital for about one or two days, depending on how you're feeling.

Liquid Intake: Before you leave, weโ€™ll ensure you can drink plenty of liquids on your own. Since we operate on the stomach, youโ€™ll need to drink more slowly. Aim for at least 48 to 64 ounces of fluid daily to avoid dehydration and discomfort.

Comfort and Mobility: Weโ€™ll make sure youโ€™re comfortable walking around and managing your pain before you go home. IV medications in the hospital help with this, but before discharge we want to make sure youโ€™re comfortable enough to be home on oral pain medications.

๐Ÿฒ Diet and Work Return:

Liquid Diet: Youโ€™ll follow a liquid diet for two weeks post-surgery.

Most people can return to work in 1 to 2 weeks if their job isnโ€™t physically strenuous, they can drink liquids at work, and they can move around periodically. Planning for two weeks off is usually best, although some may return as early as one week. If your job involves heavy lifting or other strenuous activities, plan on taking 3 to 4 weeks off. Even though the incisions are small, you donโ€™t want to stress your abdominal area.

๐Ÿ—“๏ธ Follow-Up:

Office Visits: We see patients in the office two weeks after surgery. If you need more time to recover, weโ€™ll provide additional support to ensure youโ€™re fully ready before returning to work.

Weโ€™re here to support you through every step of your recovery!

How Do I Prepare for Bariatric Surgery? ๐Ÿค”

Preparing for your bariatric surgery is crucial for a successful outcome. Hereโ€™s what you need to know:

๐ŸŒŸ Pre-Surgery Preparation:

Liquid Protein Diet: In the days or weeks leading up to your surgery, youโ€™ll typically follow a two-week liquid protein diet. This helps you lose weight before the procedure, which is beneficial for both you and your surgical team.

Reduced Liver Fat: Losing weight also reduces fat around your liver and abdomen. This makes the surgery easier and more efficient by minimizing obstruction in the surgical area.
Easier Recovery: Carrying less weight after surgery will help you move around more easily and comfortably.

Empty Stomach: Following a liquid diet ensures your stomach is completely empty before the surgery, which is essential for operating on the stomach itself. Any liquids you consume will be cleared quickly, so there are no concerns on the day of surgery.

By adhering to this pre-surgery plan, youโ€™re setting yourself up for a smoother procedure and recovery. If you have any questions or personal experiences to share, feel free to reach out in the comments!

Will I Regret Getting Bariatric Surgery? ๐Ÿค”

Itโ€™s natural to worry about whether you might regret your decision to pursue bariatric surgery. While some people experience challenges after surgery and question their choice, in the long run this sentiment is quite rare.

๐ŸŒŸ What Most People Find:

Long-Term Satisfaction: About a year after surgery, many people reflect positively on their decision, often considering it one of the best choices they've made. Some wish they had done it sooner.

Support Through Challenges: If you do encounter problems, remember that our team is here to help. Whether your journey is easy or you face complications, maintaining a close relationship with your surgeon is key to successfully navigating the post-surgery period.

Your well-being and satisfaction are our top priorities. If you have any concerns or need support after your surgery, donโ€™t hesitate to reach out!
